Djed Spence getting the plaudits

While we will likely end up with Peltier at RB whilst Dijksteel is injured, leaving no one to cover LB. This club is beyond amateur
It's a matter of record the club have been looking for a left back, hardly amateurish. Injuries are a wild card that you can only plan so far ahead for.

Yes they have, but would you send your LB and RB cover out on loan leaving Peltier who has barely played for years as the only cover for either position before you actually signed a replacement?
Considering the injury record Bola and especially Dijksteel have, it certainly wasn’t out of the question one or both would be injured this season, and something we didn’t actually need to plan for as we already had the players here to cover for them, now we don’t. It’s nothing but amateur

Strange how the only place he doesn’t seem to be rated is at this club. Premier league interest for years and a division rival signing him, but he’s not good enough for us

Paper talk about Premier League interest.
He was then loaned on deadline day to a club who were bottom of the Championship.

He's had good games for us too, doesn't mean he's currently a quality attacking player.
He wasn't involved in any way in either of the goals Forest scored.

They were sent out because they weren't deemed good enough, that's professionalism.

They weren’t good enough to be back up fullbacks so we replaced them with……no one. Great logic

If the club think Peltier can do a better job as a back up than spence then something is seriously wrong. Say Dijksteel gets another long term injury can we really expect Peltier to play two games every week? No chance

I presume the thought at right back was we have Dijksteel, Fisher (currently out longterm), McNair, Peltier and at a push Howson.

Left back, I can only assume by the squad numbers available we had a centre half & left back lined up that never happened.

It is what it is,just can't stand this dismissive attitude that people have .

Why have people got it into their heads that Spence is happy to be a back up? Footballers should be playing football. Having a young player sitting on the bench all season - great logic.

To be fair to Spence he moved up to Boro from London after being released and worked hard enough to earn a deal and break into the first team. I think that speaks well of him and his attitude despite what is written about that on here and elsewhere. People question his attitude but is there anything to really back that up?

We’re short and it looks stupid to have him out on loan when he’d be in our team now, but maybe he was knocking on Warnock’s door telling him he wanted to go and play. You can’t blame him for that. I think Coulson and Wing will have been the same.

The issue for me having a pop last week about them both being allowed out was if we were going to be playing with wing backs, which Warnock seems to quite fancy doing despite not having any.

And if we are short at full back this weekend then get Kokolo or whoever plays there for the U23s involved. Same with wing backs. I’m sick of seeing players crowbarred into positions on a weekly basis. We’ve been doing it for years and it feels counterproductive, especially when you’re weakening the team by pulling good players out of position to cover the gaps.

Two managers in a row questioning his attitude.
They’ve also praised him. What is it they are talking about when they mention his attitude? Every single young player will make a mistake, switch off, go through good and bad patches. It’s just interesting that Spence is singled out so often despite not really doing anything that others haven’t done, including the vastly experienced players in the squad.

Can I just ask for clarity. What is Spence actually supposed to be?
Right back?
Right wing back?
Right attacking midfielder?
Right forward?
I haven't seen him play well in any of those roles.

The squad has a lot of players in it.
Dijksteel is first choice right back.
Fisher is cover right back but injured.
Peltier was signed as further right back cover.
McNair can deputise if essential. Even Howson could at a push.
The club has a premier academy and strong U23 set up, there are others who could play right back.

The glaring gaps are left sided, where only Bola looks capable. He has no cover.
Could Coulson have done a job, maybe, but he looks far more suited to a wing back or more forward role. He is defensively short.
I've no doubt Warnock expected cover to be signed at left back, but it was clear Coulson was not prepared to stay as cover.

It is unlucky to lose both Dijksteel and Bola, especially as Fisher is out long term, but I'm not at all sure keeping Spence would have made sense in any of this, nor an unhappy Coulson.

Spence is a wing back. I’ve seen him play well there and show some real promise over the past couple of years. I’ve also seen him have indifferent games and some not so good ones. Much like everyone else in our squad, TBH.

Also, if we want Spence to be a full back or a winger then maybe we should have been coaching him towards that? If we’re not going to play with wing backs then he’s best out on loan anyway so it’s a moot point I suppose.

What I'd infer from Woodgate and Warnock's comments is that he had stopped putting the effort in in training.

Can anyone remember the reason why the Joe Bennett deal fell through? Looked almost definite we were going to sign him at one point. Did he choose Wigan to guarantee he'd be playing regular football?

For me, I had no issue with us allowing Spence to go out on loan, as I feel Peltier is a better option as RB cover anyway.

I do have an issue with Coulson being allowed to go out on loan however, as no way is Peltier a better option for LB cover. It was ridiculous allowing him to go out on loan when we didn't have another LB lined up to come in. Incredibly amateurish from the club and an example that our summer transfer business wasn't as great as some fans made it out to be.

Why have we been left with unbalanced squads for years now? I don't remember this being the case back in the day. We always used to have two players for each position at least.
