Sounds interesting

Britain's service industry is battling for customers, but the public need to be convinced the big names are doing all they can to limit risk to exposure. Many hotel chains, transport companies, restaurants and pubs are making big promises of 'deep cleans' and ''enhanced hygiene practices', but with the resurgence of Covid-19, Morland Sanders puts them to test and asks just how safe is it when we go out. Government public health guidance says regular cleaning of surfaces plays a vital role in limiting the transmission of Covid-19 in public settings. In a national experiment, the programme tests the cleanliness of the surfaces people might encounter on a commute, or going for a drink, a meal or a mini staycation? It also examines emerging research concerning airborne transmission of Covid, as well as meeting people whose wellbeing is reliant on the hygiene standards of the service industry

I already know the outcome of this program. A few venues will have poor to average cleaning standards which the viewers of said program will use to tar every hospitality venue with the same brush.

It's what irks me about the hygiene rating system in this country. There is absolutely no legitimate reason in this country why every venue that serves food should not have a 5 star rating. Working in a restaurant/pub myself that has 5 stars I do not eat at any establishment that doesn't have 5 stars because I know what it takes to get 5 stars. Even 4 stars is dodgy ground.

Can’t it just be the paperwork hasn’t been done correctly?

Fecal matters.

Proper cleanliness is doable and it's largely down to lazy management and staff. Costa and Tesco all had dirty outlets but they also had clean outlets. The outcomes did not shock me but the corporate speak was frighteningly complacent.

I’m prepared to go down to a 3 in normal times, but at the moment the hygiene certificate has to be a 5.

The amount of paperwork involved in my game would surprise a few. Temperature checks on all fridges and freezers digitally and manually every day. This also includes checking the temperature of the items in the fridge and freezer too as you don't know if the digital readings on the fridges are broken or not unless you do. That's just for starters.
A 3 star place more than likely isn't filling out said paperwork, kitchen would be in need of repairs and storage may be an issue.

Think about this: you have people on low hours, minimum wage, no job prospects and what happens?
I always ask myself how I might feel in a job like that when I would be expected to deep clean etc. I would bet that a lot of these workers are still expected to do their usual work on top.

I work in industrial food factories. They are sanitised and then swabs taken - they cannot afford any contaminated product, bacterial or allergen. Time must be allowed for cleaning, no matter what and it has to be logged. Then there isnt any doubt whether or not it is clean. if you dont wash your hands each and every single time you open the factory door and/or you fail to wear the required PPE, you are banned.

I think something similar could be applied to most places. Are we prepared to pay for it? An extra 10p on your pint to pay for the extra cleaning?
