Different team completely next season?

I don’t know why we’d need to worry about players leaving after a promotion. Some won’t be good enough and will be moved on. Some won’t want to warm a premier league bench and might move on. We’ll be getting plenty of money and there’s some in the kitty so don’t worry about transfers.

Rubbish as 5 m will buy you exactly what we have now mediocrity. We need a a top striker with a proven record and they cost money. Look at Ivan Toney for 10m.

I’d rather pay for the right player that settle in 2 or three cheaper alternatives.

Rubbish. Really? McNair, Dijksteel, Crooks, Jones, Stuani, Clayton, Leadbitter, Adomah, Ayala...... you don't have to break the bank to sign the "right player".

Or Saville, Flint, Assombalonga, Fletcher.....

Our record on signing payers for big fees is generally shocking.

£5m is a lot for a championship club to spend on one player. I'd rather sign 4/5 hungry players for £3-5m each (still significant investment for a championship club) than put all our eggs in one basket on a £10m+ striker.

But as I say that doesn't mean there are exceptions. If a Toney becomes available and we're very confident he'll be a success and we can afford it without leaving ourselves short in other areas then absolutely.

All ifs buts and maybes. But it's "rubbish" to think we have to be spending stupid sums on players to improve or build a promotion winning side. It's that sort of thinking that's set us back years in the past.

Why would it be a new team? It's another bizarre reaction to a defeat that occurred because of some poor decision making in the box and a howler from the goalkeeper. If we beat Bournemouth will you still be saying it'll be a whole new team next season? No chance.

The players leaving in the summer are the ones that don't play or are here on loan. We might make some good money on Spence which can be reinvested. There's a load of fringe players who need to move on and then we can add what we need. We need a goalkeeper, a left sided defender, a wing back and a couple of strikers. The nucleus is there IMO. People need to calm down a bit.

McNair was 6 m riding up 7 wasn’t he.

And Most of the others you named were almost over 10 years ago football finances have moved on. Jones is a true one off you don’t get to many like that.

You wanted proven quality esp up front then it will cost and it will cost more than 5m

I wouldn’t as that is the failed policy that has left us with the mediocrity we have had of late.

We need a proven striker and keeper.

I think Fry will stay, hopefully Jones will realise he will get regular first team football here and won’t be tempted to warm a bench elsewhere. Tav is the one I worry about, he’s essential to the team but I think there will be interest in him from PL. I thought McGree had been brought in with that in mind as a like for like replacement but hope not.

I agree, unfortunately we have had a really stark demonstration of how rubbish we are going forward when Jones is missing.

We need to buy some creativity in the wide areas to challenge/backup Bola and Jones, maybe one more midfielder but we've got Payero to come back in remember and I think he could be good next season. I'd defintiely have another full season of Balogun if we could get him back and that leaves us maybe needing to sign 2 strikers on top as Connolly and Sporar will go. Obviously need a keeper and a left sided CB.

This is of course dependent on keeping Dijksteel, Fry, Paddy, Jones, Bola, Tav, Howson, Watmore. I think everyone else could go if we get a decent offer, i really like Crooks but he picks up too may yellow cards and seems to have stamina issues. Bamba looked really comfortable yesterday so I'd maybe give him another year as backup and Peltier too depending on how much we're paying him.

It's defo not a full rebuild but it will be a busy summer regardless of which leagie we are in next season.

It isn’t we want to lose McNair, Tav, Jones etc- they might want to play in the Prem - and can you blame them? I hope all mentioned stay - but that can’t be guaranteed. It is worst case scenario - but it could be played out. With the 4 or so loan players needing to bring in 7 or 8 potentially first team players is pretty wholesale in changes

Interesting that Wilder said he was after a left sided central defender and ideally he would be playing McNair on the right side of a back three.. where does that leave Dijksteel?

I think Dijksteel has been one of our best performers.. can’t see he wanting to be McNair’s deputy.

What is imperative is that the squad needs to be deeper, although we probably won’t have the funds to cover every position. Looking at the world cup break of 5 weeks (seasons starts a week earlier, but finishes at the same time as this year) there is going to be loads of congestion with fixtures from December onwards.

With Jones, Tav, Fry, McNair, Dijksteel, Bola, Crooks, Watmore I think we have 8 Championship first teamer squaders who are all contracted and will only leave if we want them to for fees - big ones in most cases. (I think McNair would only leave for Rangers, his club and not yet).
I do think with Payero, McGree, Coburn we have some very good players fighting to get in to the first team.
Howson may stay another season, or maybe two on reduced terms.
You would think Boyd-Munce will be part of the first team squad.
That would be 13. We would need another 12 to complete the squad exc U21's

What happens to Ameobi and Fisher is impossible to predict given the injuries, but all have another year left on contract. They may leave but not for fees I wouldn't have thought.
Hall, Akpom and Daniels appear to be out of the thoughts, so most likely to move on, but both have another year under contract and not easy to move.
Bamba, Peltier and Taylor may stay another year, or may be released.
That's 8 players who may or may not be around.

Connolly, Balogun, Sporar and Siliki will all return to their parent clubs, freeing space on a wage bill.

We will get a very big fee for Spence and will re-invest all of that - and more I believe without having to sell further. We have FFP scope and I think Gibson will back his manager.

I think he will spend big on "a striker" (£10m plus) and bring Balogun back. With Watmore and Coburn that would be enough to start the season well up front.
I think he will sign a first choice goalkeeper, a left footed CB, cover for both wing backs and definitely a DCM. Pretty much as Coluka posted.
I do think Wilder will have the budget to do all that this summer and would boost that 13 to a very strong 20.
The academy will also provide players, the old steadies can provide further cover, dependent upon who moves and who digs in and stays.

The key question is will the recruitment be good enough?
Chris' record on strikers was his major blemish in Sheffield (£55m on McBurnie, Brewster, Mousset and Burke)
Connolly was another very poor choice.

I actually think we are in a very good position. It will be a busy summer - they usually are - but we start from a good position contract and player value wise.

OP basically saying “there will need to be a big rebuild if we sell our 5 best first team players”

Well, yeah…..

Wel be signing at least 5 players in the summer as we do ever season plus at least one keeper . But come may this group will have the current crop as world beaters or serving fries 😀

This exactly.
Great post indeedidio

It's always the case that negativity creeps on after a bad result, just in the same way we tend to get a bit carried away after a good win.

Its been obvious for a while that our squad is paper thin, we have no cover for Jones, or Howson and come the summer we need to do a lot of work on the forward line, with most likely 3 signings.

Plus a reliable keeper too.

It's anyone's guess on who will leave (of the current team) but we're not a million miles away I don't think.
