Morning all. Our younger posters have probably never heard of it! It was a service where you rang 16 and had a chart record played on a loop.

Remember as a young un going to a phone box with mates and listened to it - then passed the phone on!

Erimus do you remember this?

One of the best memories? Listening to Vehicle by The Ides of March. Great horn section and vocals that sounded like a black man’s vocals - but wasn’t! Anyhow, it was a great track of its time

Yep, dial a disk, also always pushing the refund / cance,l button in phone booths (kids don't bother asking) to see if any money is returned.
Listening booth at Lesley Browns in stockton before buying a record.
Stockton high street actually having a large thriving market at weekends..
I have become my parents, I am officially old

Dial 16 for dial a disc
I used it too much. I dreaded the phone bill coming it was one of the few itemized things on the bill. My dad used to shout a lot when he got the bill. He even put a lock on the dial for a short time 😁

You could also ring a number and listening to the hoax message sent to the Ripper team. Very chilling at the time.

There was also the speaking clock - At the first stroke it will 10.01 and 30 seconds beep, beep, beep.

My dad put a lock on the phone to stop me and my sister using the phone - bill was out the window. He came home from work and had to ring about another job and couldn't find the key. He's kicking off so my sister got an hairgrip and took the lock off for him. The lock only ever stopped him from using the phone and it was never put back on. 😁 😁 😁

Also on the old phones you could dial a number by tapping it out on the buttons the handset rested on (y)

And if the lock was on you could tap out a number on the buttons. Didn't work that well just got random people saying hello. It was more like getting one over your Dad. He globe had a globe to put money in for using the phone. Still remember our old number. 211331.

We used to call 16 from a phone booth and during the couple of seconds of silence between the track we'd shout the phone box's number down the line and then hang up. A few seconds later the phone would ring from lasses who'd heard the number which they'd been listening for. I don't know if this was just a Teesside thing or national..

Tried that a few times, not always successful.
