Detectorists

Superb TV. Mackenzie Crook was interviewed on 5Live on Saturday morning and sounded very uncomfortable, which only made me like him more. He said he set out to write something that wasn't cynical and I think that's one of its strengths. Great music, too.
He always sound uncomfortable and on BBC breakfast watching him being uncomfortable was uncomfortable . He doesn't like the focus, which is why I find his writing/acting genius as if feels so real.

Thanks for the recommendation of this. I started watching this from the beginning yesterday and I'm already at Series 2. Thoroughly enjoying it.

I love Detectorists, every episode is a joy to watch - except this special?
I couldn't get into it, just didn't engage me at all like every other episode has, but hey ho were all different
Yeah it was ok but had a lot to live up to and for me fell short. Not sure it worked in the longer format, bit too serious at times and not enough of some of the outstanding supporting characters. Just my opinion of course.

The rest of the series is absolutely brilliant of course.

I spent a few days under the weather over the Christmas break and watched the whole thing on iPlayer. Absolutely loved it and unbelievably realised that I had actually watched the first episode when it first aired years ago... I must've been distracted doing work on my laptop or something, as I felt a real idiot for having denied myself such a heart-warming show for so many years.

I loved the slower pace, the full ensemble of interesting characters and the camera work in the countryside was wonderful. Such a scenic TV show.

I like Rachel Stirling, she was good in the Bletchley Files. It was so sad that her Mother (In real life and in the Dectorists) Dame Diana Rigg (Emma Peel for us Oldies) passed away after the first series.
She was a game old bird, and Rachel is the spitting image of her Mam.

I have just finished 3 series in a week and am blown away.
The melancholic harmonious stomach churning banality mixed with such sharp with and genius timing of the cast....I am so glad this was reccomedned on here
I feel a better person for having watched it
Plus the theme tune by Johnny flynnis hauntingly brilliant
When tv does this to you it's a rare but beautiful thing

Absolutely superb isn't it. Found I enjoyed it in a similar way to that which I enjoyed Gone Fishing. Slow paced, gentle humour, great soundtrack and beautifully shot showing the true beauty of our wonderful little island.

Recently re-watched both series of Early Doors and that was as excellent as I remembered the first time round

I'll have to try early doors out

Really disappointing the way Sophie just disappeared after series 2. They could've just said that she'd finished uni and gone back home, or gone travelling, or got a job somewhere. Could've kept her in it with the odd letter or social media post etc, and would've been good to bring her back for the xmas special last year.

It's TV gold. I'm a recent devotee and have binged the lot over the last month or so. Definitely see the parallels with Gone Fishing; gentle and whimsical but funny. Particularly like the setting and the scenery. It's supposed to be set in Essex but was filmed in Suffolk, and it's got that dreamy, endless English summer feel which I could happily live in forever.

I'm dragging this old thread up as Im watching again on "gold" Laughing and crying at nearly 2am. I used to be in the Maddison at this time on a Friday :D

I think what you are doing now must be so much better for you 👍

I'm rewatching it too on Gold. There's loads more things you notice when you watch again. Fabulous television

Just watched the first 4 episodes of Detectorists tonight. No idea why I haven’t watched before, loving it so far. Can definitely see the similarities with Gone Fishing. Subtle easy going comedy that leaves me smiling throughout

It's a wonderful concoction, streets ahead of the Fishing stuff for me. I last saw the lad on the fishing show not so long back. Comedy must be quite a close knit community.

Hang on a minute, that's This Country I was thinking about. The power of Sunday night booze 😂
