Democracy

Take 2...

People talk a lot about democracy. Many seem proud of the democratic system in this country. I’m not. We aren’t functioning as a democracy and we haven’t been for some time.

If the things that have happened in the country (largely since 2016) were going on elsewhere those countries would rightly be labelled banana republics.

We are sleepwalking into really, really sinister and dangerous territory to which the majority appear to be blind if polls are anything to go by. Never before have we had a government made up of such an incompetent, negligent and corrupt bunch of spivs and charlatans as we have right now. We are treading an extremely worrying path here. Time to wake up.

We’ve been sleepwalking for some time now reading the doom and gloom on here for the last 11 years since labour lost power, when is the grand reveal taking place where Boris is unmasked as Satan?

It’s happening literally in front of your eyes. If you can’t see it then I can’t help you. But hey at least your team is winning.

I'm sorry Adi but I've had to report this thread to Rob for being ignorant and discriminatory to the original thread that you posted. No hard feelings mate.

It all began with the passing of the coronavirus bill through parliament and nobody batted an eyelid.

Seem to remember some calling it conspiracy theory nonsense. Well well well.

You seriously believe that’s where it began?

Body never set up to bring prosecutions not allowed to bring prosecutions shocker - from the article

“In recent years, the Electoral Commission has sought to develop the capability to bring criminal offences before the courts,” she said. “This has never been agreed by the government or Parliament.

If the commission was shut down then that would go against democracy but as they are still there - if they spot something illegal can they not just report it to the appropriate bodies to prosecute? That’s what the article seems to suggest that it’s a duplication and waste of money.

The problem is though that people like FatCat appear to be in the majority. Either a fundamental failure of understanding or simply not caring as long as their team wins.

If you can’t see the problem in removing the teeth of one of the most important political watchdogs then I’m afraid there is very little I can do for you.

They’re going after judicial review as well btw.

There are none so blind as those that will not see.

There's been a slow erosion going on since the early 80's. The attack on local democracy that began by removing power from local authorities to set their own rates and spend the income on whatever the local electorate saw fit. The stealing of business rates by central government, our area suffering badly from this, was another nail into the coffin.

The attack on the electoral commission is being carried out in using the same reason, it's cheaper to do without their ability to interfere.

I looking through Facebook at local history groups and a common attack on local government is the disappearance of park keepers, gardeners etc. Despite the age of those posting none ever look back at the changes to local democracy as a contributor to their services being taken away. Nobody questions the extra burdens placed on local authorities without them being allowed to raise the funds required to perform them.

The attack is now on national government, having got away with their crimes if the last four decades they know that there will be little or no outcry.

Not only judicial review, they are also trying to price anyone who tries to hold them to account out of the game - viz The Good Law Project.

I could put with incompetent and negligent but relentless out n the open corruption without consequence is turning UK into a banana monarchy with no rue of law. Things look very bleak. It seems most people are clueless about what is happening and probably wouldn't care if they did, so long as their uber eats turns up on time.
