Decent crowd on Saturday?

24k for a Uefa cup QF. Thats proper sh*t

I suppose, at least with that one, you could use the fact we were already 2-0 down as an excuse for some of those who stayed away.

When it looks like you might be going out anyway, some will definitely have just saved money and watched on free TV.

It was not a great crowd in number, but many fans had spent a lot of money that season going to Rome Stuttgart, Graz, etc and domestic cup games

Aye, that's true.

Many would definitely prioritise the away leg of matches, and it can't have been cheap.

It's been pleasantly surprising that we've managed to average healthy crowds since dropping back into the Championship.

It used to be such a depressing experience attending games during the Mowbray and Strachan eras, when we had crowds of 13/14k, and even then I think there was only actually 9/10k inside the stadium.

I feel we owe so much to Karanka, who breathed life back into the club.

Would love 27k. I’ve said it before we can be as big as them fuc£ wits up the road. I’m sick of how passionate Mags fans are and how Sland have the best support given they have no success. We are a big club and can get big crowds. Sorry for the rant.

Sunderland might get the biggest home attendances in the championship in terms of numbers but the sol doesn't create anywhere near the level of noise that the riverside does.

Unless we were winning trophies and picked up glory supporters, I can't see that happening.

Tynside alone is over twice the population of Teesside, and that's not including Northumberland and County Durham supporters that ignore Sunderland.

Our success levels would have to be very different for our support to outstrip theirs in the modern day, I'd say.

Could maybe argue we could compete with Sunderland if things were going well.

Wearside and County Durham are fairly similar in population to Teesside and North Yorkshire, though I imagine the Boro suport in North Yorkshire probably doesn't run too deeply beyond Whitby.

Not sure we could ever compete with Sunderland to be honest. You could argue that we are both punching with higher than average attendances at the moment but Sunderland itself is almost twice the size of Boro in terms of population. As for North Yorkshire, you only have to go as far as Loftus before the Leeds support kicks in, mainly due to a rare phenomena that occurred during the 70's. A similar bizarre occurrence took place in the 70's which attracted 'Teessiders' based north of the Tees to the Black Cats. All very odd.

Let's be clear Newcastle and Sunderland share a catchment upwards of 2 million.
However you define our catchment you would struggle to hit 500k.
In the same league they should both be getting at least double our crowds.

There has being books written on North Yorkshire and Boro support - Middlesbrough did not exist till around 1840 in 33 years it went from 50 people to 100,000 people - it was also in the 1870s one of the most industralised and urbanised 10 square miles of the UK, if not the World. It had nothing in common with places like Thirsk and the world of James Heriot they could have been thousands of miles away Many Yorkshire folk were weary of all the foreign like working class people with scouse like accents who are suddenly appeared in a place near them. The legacy of this has continued. The bottom line is traditional North Yorkshire support is very limited. Newcastle and Sunderland have been centres of population since the time of Bede.

When I were a lad in Northallerton in the 80s there was an almost overnight move from supporting Boro to Leeds. I don't know what their parents were thinking.

It was really noticeable in the school playground. I remember after 1 midweek game against the Geordies me and one other lad had on these darts shirts sponsored by Newcastle Brown that had been thrown into the crowd. We were the only 2 remaining Boro fans at that point.

Edinboro - have you been through the "seats available" online tickets for the home game an totted the lot up?

Flippin eck. Thats dedication - if you have.

Looked myself and it appears only the usual places have over a 100 or more seats left.

I bet Bristol dont bring many.

It may not be that accurate.

Sunderland itself isn’t twice the size of boro, Sunderland itself is about the same size as boro. The city of Sunderland (made up of Sunderland, Washington etc) is bigger yes

We played a phenomenal number of matches that season on all fronts, the prices were very high and not discounted for cup matches as is the case these days. And live terrestrial TV too.
Our support is the very last thing there should be fingers pointed at.

Our crowds this season have been commendable given the club's actions this summer and the performances this season.

It is as simple as that.
