Dean Windass - Dementia

I went to see him at a Golf club in Hull one evening. He was so bladdered, he fell off his stool. When he’d sobered up a bit, he only had good things to say about Boro.

Saw him last year and always thought he spoke well. He clearly was one of the few lucky ones to 'make it' and fair play to him.

Sad news about his dementia.

Remember that FA Cup semi at Old Trafford against Arsenal. Despite the result I remember my dad chuckling afterwards about how Windass had crunched Vieira in the opening minutes after which Vieira went 'missing in action' for the rest of the game

So sad, but been reading stage 2 dementia is not much different to just getting old.
Great guy, just your typical pub friend who made it in the football world.

Head up Deano, you'll always be welcomed by the Boro faithful 👍

Sad news. The only signing during the Venables era iirc. Enjoyed watching him play for us, much more skilful and intelligent footballer than I expected.

Sad news, he's definitely a character.

When I think of his time here I always think back to the Cudicini sending off incident.

Free-kick......cross comes in and Windass leads with his arm and takes Cudicini out. Cudicini shouts at him and gets sent off. Brilliant :ROFLMAO:

Yeah one of the players I loved to watch. Like a cross between uche and bergkamp. One of the things I don't like about 5 subs hundred miles an hour modern football is that a player like windass with no pace but bags of skill wouldn't get a look in.

One of those players you hated in opposition but loved his no nonsense get up and at em style on your team. It has to be down to heading the ball, so sad to see anyone struggle after years of playing the game we all love.

Best wishes to Dean and family

Remember a Sunderland night game where straight from kick off he drop kicked their keeper in the head. Ref did nowt, so clearly the 'early doors reducer' was a strategem. The very best wishes to him.

This is one of my favourite moments of that match.

Also the atmosphere was so special.

Would not put him down as a big header of the ball unlike some of those who have been diagnosed.
Threw himself at the ball a lot.

I remember him as a bit of a bull heading alot even if not creating a lot with it.

Such a sad situation - such a great player and person.

It is definitely a conversation we need to be having.

We know recurrent minor head trauma increases dementia risk. Talk of outlawing heading from youth leagues gets criticised.

I can see the opposite argument that we will be removing cultural norms. Some will think the risks are worth it to keep kids doing what they loved..

But 5 a side or futsal rules til 14 or 16 seems reasonable to me.

(Heading the ball was all i was good at as a kid with a genetic arthritis)
