I think they expected De Gea to move on when they offered him the new deal.

He was in awful form and all the noises were that Henderson would be replacing him in the near future.
Circumstances led to him staying at the club and getting his spot back, he's put in some really good performances lately too.
They'd likely be lower table and out of the Champions League without some of his saves.
 
As already said it was reported that Henderson was struggling after COVID. That has combined with De Gea being back to his best, so it's no wonder.
 
Wasn't part of Henderson's issue his attitude? There was some internal discontent at his behaviour I believe.
