De Roon

Is he a reject?
We spent big on him, he scored some of our few goals in the season, we sold him for more after our relegation.

Seemed a nice guy, just wish he hadn't inadvertantly bad mouthed Teesside as soon as he went back to Atalanta.

By 'reject' I assumed the OP was being slightly ironic. He's just another player that our fans, ( I use that word in the wider sense, ) didn't warm to who went on to become a regular elsewhere.

Well the fans weren’t exactly kind to him

was one of the better players in that season

Exactly boro fans have a knack of getting it wrong about players

In fairness to him, I don't think he meant anything by his comments.

He just said that you couldn't get good coffee on Teesside, and he might be right, I wouldn't know.

We signed him and played him in the wrong position to accommodate Clayton. He isn’t a box to box player and was doing a job playing there.

Leadbetter and Clayton were so far out of their depths that season it was untrue and neither player recovered from it. De Roon had to carry the central midfield that year.

Marten was not only a quality player but a quality human being. Such a lovely guy, as I'm sure a few of us know. He really tried to absorb himself in Boro. Didn't work out but I can only remember him with fondness

I thought he looked very much at ease in the EPL, being asked to play an unfamiliar role in an often struggling team.

No surprise to me hes doing well (again) with Atalanta.

He was probably the 'best' of AKs prem summer signings. That's not an endorsement 😕

He definitely wasn't in the Barragan (couldn't take a throw) or Fisher (remember him?) bracket.

I just think he's a player you'd easily forget. I imagine in someone asked a Boro fan to name 10 or maybe even 15 Boro CMs I doubt many would include him. That says it all.

My main issue with him was just that he didn’t look like a footballer on the ball. I appreciate players can still be effective regardless of this, so call me irrational, but I think for £12m (?) you expect someone who looks comfortable with the ball at their feet. Yes I know he’s gone on to do ok back at Atalanta, but I don’t think he made much of a “positive contribution” when he was here. People talk about his 4 league goals as though it was some kind of amazing return. Yes I also appreciate he was largely played out of position.

It’s not a black and white thing. He isn’t amazing or awful. I thought he was a bit crap for us, but it was a terrible season.

He's a decent player who played for us under a manager way out of his depth.

We're seeing this season how players can perform after being written off whilst playing under poor managers.

I thought he was a nice bloke but he always seemed to be a yard behind the play for me, although can’t knock his energy or enthusiasm for chasing it. Wouldn‘t quite say high energy headless chicken, but he wasn’t good for us in my opinion. Perhaps it was down to the role he was asked to play and the (lack of) quality around him.

Glad to see he’s doing well at Atlanta.
