DC Santa Clara 1 Boro 0 FT

To be fair, with no incomings, Lenihan coming through seemingly unscathed against a team further ahead in their pre-season that is not a bad outcome. That man Gilbert once again proving his worth too. Another feisty game, these Portuguese teams like a bit of physicality it seems.

Clearly we need improvements in the team in a number of places, and I don’t mean players from the likes of Hull City, especially if Rav and H. do leave.

Yes Lenihan getting some minutes is good, wonder of Bangura got minutes too. It was this time last year, first behind closed doors game that he got injured.

Did they say what system we played anywhere? Looking at the team that seemed to be on the pitch at the end it doesn't look like wing backs unless Woolston played as one of the 3 and Whittaker or McGree played right wing back.

Although I don't see a recognised right back there either. Looked like it was:

Glover
Woolston
Rav
Lenihan
Borges
Barlaser
Morris
Whittaker
McGree
Burgzorg
Conway

1st half seemed to be:

Brynn
Ayling
Fry
McCormick
McCabe
Hackney
Gilbert
Azaz
Silvera
Finch
Forss

I guess Ayling, Fry and McCormick could have been the back 3 with Silvera left wing back, no idea who would be right wing back though.

Is that young Sonny Finch getting stuck in there? Go on son give him some!
No doubt they’ll have been trying to cheat, it’s the norm for Pog football.
When I played for NATO in Lisbon, I got sent off quite a few times for decking an opponent for cheating.

Very interesting that it appears he's going with a 4-2-3-1. Plenty of time to look at different formations in the other friendlies though.

I'm sick of that formation.

(Unless we use it like AK did with us in the Championship - defensively solid as a rock).

People put too much stock in formations. I used to say this under Carrick too.

Formations aren’t rigid. Teams will often transition to different shapes in and out of possession.

Game plan, energy, speed of play and organisation are all factors which are more important - regardless of formation.

In the latter days under Carrick, we lacked a number of those factors, not helped by a complete loss of pace and poor January recruitment.

Sunderland last year ran by a very simple formula. Organisation at the back, get the ball forward quickly, fill the top end of the pitch with pace and creativity. Get balls in the box, don’t take risks at the back. Simple principles, but they were very effective.

Edwards is saying all the right things about how we want to go about things, but he will need the right players recruiting to deliver that game plan - especially if he wants to play more of a pressing game from the front. Beyond a striker, a physical and athletic central midfielder is also top of my list this summer as well.
