Darragh Lenihan

I know Carrick mentioned before Xmas that he wasn't too far away, but they weren't putting a timescale on it. He might be closer than we think, especially with us letting Clarke go and not bringing in a replacement. It will take him a while to get back up to match fitness and he isn't going to be starting anytime soon, but will be great if we do see him back soon.

He's another body to cover at centre half and his voice in the dressing room is a plus but he doesn't improve our starting XI.

To be fair 30 isn't that old, especially for a defender, despite him being out for so long, so saying he will never play again seems a stretch. Also, as had been mentioned, he was clearly fully fit last summer as he played in pre-season. A bit more transparency from the club wouldn't go amiss though when it comes to timescales etc. I don't think we will see him this season as they won't want to take any risks, but he might leave in the summer.

He's another player who seems to get better and more rated, the longer he's out.

The biggest attribute Lenihan brought to the team was his leadership skills. He wasn't an amazing CB (although he was much better than Edmundson!) and even if he managed to get fully fit and back to his best, I still would have Fry & Rav ahead of him in the pecking order.

It won't be till April/May we actually see him in the match day squad even if he was to resume training in the next couple weeks, you would think.

Plenty of time for either VDB, Fry or Edmundson to pick up an injury before then.

I would guess the Club think there is a decent chance of him returning, because he has not been paid off in the transfer window. Also another centre back was not brought in to replace Clarke.

When the players who are registered to play this season is made public we will find out.

I know every team has 4 or 5 injuries mid season , but we have been in the Spurs League for injuries this season i.e double figures.

Officially, his contract runs until June 26, by which time he will be 32.
If we are going to fix our defensive problems and create "leaders", Lenihan isn't a good investment for the immediate or mid-term future.
Playing at Gateshead, and getting injured again, isn't good for him or Boro.
Frankly, we need to focus elsewhere and pay him off.
Is he going to be any use if he comes back anytime in the last 16 games, with new players and the potential of further injury?
I doubt it.

I think he was a decent solid player, not a world beater but leadership was a bonus.

His player ratings historically are as good as Clarkes and better then edmundson, so if he's going to be fit I see edmundson as a squad player and then we have 3 main CB to choose from in Fry, Lenihan and RDB, with ayling and dijksteel able to cover if needed. Albeit the less the better 😂

Agree his defending was no better than others but in addition to his leadership he was decent on the ball and also comfortable playing on the left.

He probably isn't as good a defender as Rav or Fry, but I'd expect both of them would look better alongside Lenihen than each other.

So if he did get fully fit it'd be a bit of a conundrum as I think Lenihen & Fry or Lenihen & Rav as pairings are possibly better than the pairing of Rav & Fry.

You cant just pay him off when he has 18 months left.
