Wonder how long away he is from full recovery from injury now, must be 2 or 3 weeks away is it
 
I reckon he'll play for us if we do start back up.

But then I also imagine he'll be very aware of how injury prone he is and how he needs another long-term contract, whether it's here or elsewhere, so who knows.
 
I think there is a game of bluff going on here.

I don’t buy the idea Leeds want him. Why would a team that is going back to the PL want to take on board a near 30 yr old CB that has struggled with the pace of the PL when he was In it and was a few yrs younger plus is a tad injury prone in the early months of most years? Even as cover, it would be an unwise move by them, imho.

I suspect the player wants to stay but has been offered a massive pay cut to do so and feels he deserves better. It would not surprise me if the Leeds story was put around by his agent. This pandemic has come at a bad time for out of contract players. Many clubs will be looking to reduce outlay and risk not add to it. I may well be wrong, but he and many others in his situation need to understand the new norm and that clubs will not be willing to pay a big outlay for now while we are in the throws of this pandemic. Some players may end up with no club and no wage.
 
He put something on Instagram a few weeks back saying how he was sad to be moving house, so expect he's already gone. He's back training today with the rest of the squad, but whether he plays for us again I don't know.

I hope he stays coluka, he's one of the very few players I would have loved to have kept, regardless of his injury record, he wants to stay & is more than good enough
The Boro should have pushed out the boat to have kept him, but we don't know the full story

He's almost definitely got enough money to have multiple homes.
I'm sure he's open to offers if the money's better down south, and I wouldn't blame him.
 
He wasn't coming to games as injured players are required to do - George, Shotton, Fry, Gestede, Randolph, etc were at every game when injured - even when supposedly a week away from returning to action he wasn't there.
He's moved his entire family down south during a pandemic.
He might play until the end of the season but he isn't staying. If he's signed a pre-contract with someone that starts on July 1st, how will that work?
I'd love to know why someone so committed decided to down tools.
 
I notice Sam Stubbs is back in training with the club, with the Dutch league being cancelled, so we've got another option at centre back anyway.
Not that he'll be as good as Ayala, but it's better than nothing and it's a useful boost.

Edit: woops, forgot he'd played for Hamilton too, so he's probably ineligible.

I too hope he stays. He has always been a great favourite of mine ever since his debut. I love his no nonsense approach. He is a threat at both ends of the pitch and imho a leader on the pitch. Clearly we all speculate and do not know the whole story. However, I have just read the family have relocated in the south of the country. That tells me he has already sorted out where he will be playing you would think.

Would love him to stay. About as good as it gets at this level, no coincidence our shocking run coincided with his injury. Due to injury and selection didn't really get a chance in the premier league. Was excellent away to Arsenal though.

I can understand the club offering a pay cut. Aside from the fact his wages are probably beyond us now anyway, his fitness record is a concern. If you were confident he'd play 35+ games a season then you can justify giving him a bigger contract. But you just can't bank on him being available.

A club with more money can afford to take that risk on his fitness. Covid-19 might have changed things a bit though. Presumably fewer offers on the table for him than there might have been before. Here's hoping.
 
Just posted this on the thread about Gibson training with Boro.

"I was thinking the other day that I can see them letting Ayala go so they can replace him with Gibson. Not sure that's a good thing though as a fit Ayala is better than Gibson. "
 
Ayala was injured from New Years day so its pushing on for 5 months injured if he is still injured, how long is his longest spell out?
 
He's done a great job for us.
The idea of him moving to a prem club seems a bit fanciful to me - great at this level tho.
 
His injury record is poor really cant see leeds interested. Like gibson he a top end championship defender nothing higher
 
Gibson made the step up to the Premier with Boro and really looked the part in the top flight. He was in the Englanf squad remember..Whatever the issue with Burnley he already proved his Premier class.

Got called up once to replace the injured Smalling v the mighty Lithuania - and that was it.
 
I can't see him going to the prem as a first choice given his injury record and lack of top level experience, but surely his wages are worth a punt if you are picking up £100 million a year from TV money. This is a top class championship defender for free. In the current market you'd be paying between 10 and 25 million to get such a player out of his contract. The fact that he was a vital part of a record breaking defence won't have escaped everyone's notice.
 
Ayala has been a great player for us and it will be painful watching him sign for another club on a free,I would have moved heaven and earth to get him to stay,the partnership with Gibson was pivotal to our promotion. I believe he would have stayed given a decent offer,offering one of the most consistent championship defenders a massive pay cut was never going to end well for us.
