Dairy and meat exports down 96% due to Brexit

How did you manage to find out how all the farmers and dairy owners voted? I thought the referendum was meant to be secret ballot. Shows what I know!!

Sprouts- I never said ALL- I am willing to stand corrected but I am sure that I read somewhere that a large percentage of Farmers voted leave.

The Farmers Union actually advised their members to vote remain but a pre poll before the vote had it thus
I was drawn by this in that report.

“Farmers who say they will vote to leave say that British agriculture will thrive if the UK leaves. They feel that they will no longer be constrained by EU membership and being within the Single Market. British farmers will be able to farm and trade more freely, and increase production to meet increasing global demand for food – as well as benefitting from more appropriate policies that are set by the UK government which relate to the way the UK farms.”

Nothing like a turkey, vote and Christmas is there?

Still early days, bound to be issues to begin with. Pandemic hasn't helped either. One little example we order around £500's worth of meat every Thursday for delivery Friday for weekend use (we order smaller amounts every other day) obviously hospitality has been shut or under extreme restrictions for over a year now so we haven't been ordering anywhere near that amount. This will be seen on every part of the country.

But Randy- we were supposed to be better off from day 1. You know- oven ready deal and all that- they need us more than we need them.
This has cost jobs and livelihoods already- it is far easier to lose a job than it is to find another one. Many people will not work again because the business they worked in no longer exists. Once custom is lost it is difficult to get it back. Many people will lose their homes. Many people will suffer mental heath problems because of unemployment. Sadly. a number of people will take their own lives. (Farmers in particular are at an especially high risk of suicide ) All because we were lied to.
As for the pandemic- well the article specifically states that it is not pandemic related but purely Brexit.
Early days it is- but it will take time to recover from the early days of losing something that we already had. In the meantime we will get more of the above.
Sorry to be so negative Randy and I hope you don't think I am having a go at you personally and if you do I apologise for it (or at any body else) but I am so angry at how the voters (for or against) were lied to and manipulated.

No, I know your not having a go.
Just a possible explanation to a part of the problem.

From recent reports many fishermen, some of whom sailed up the Thames with Farage, are also now regretting their decisions, not only on backing Brexit but also in their trust in Boris to get a deal. Can’t say farmers etc weren’t warned but they knew better.

Losing 96% of your trade is a little more serious than a teething problem mate. It may will be early days but how many businesses will survive to the later days?

As I said, a part explanation to part of the problem. I'm not denying Brexit has played a part but it certainly can't have caused a 96% loss of trade all by itself which is what I was getting at.

But the article was about exports to the EU?

I watched a report on a dairy farmer who was considering pouring his milk down the drain because sales were being down due to Covid. His usually buyers (schools, restaurants & pubs) had closed due to lockdown.

Do we need to look at the bigger picture here before we blame Brexit.

Possibly Norman- but the article is only about exports attributable to Brexit

So why wasn't consumption transferred to the home?
For the same reason we have more children going into school dinners on a Monday and a Friday than every other day of the week. Them two days are usually the first and last decent meal they will get all weekend. Not everyone can afford to buy meat for the household and we all know who is to blame for that.
