Cycling Malton

Just come back from a few days at the campsite next to Castle Howard (thoroughly recommend it). Whenever we went up to Malton there always seemed to be people flying down the road doing some sort of race or event. Definitely Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly Monday but even Wednesday evening when we left at about 1030. Anybody know what was going on? There were no signs for anything but all of them had some sort of race number.

London Edinburgh London perhaps, which is going on and would explain the gaps between sightings ?

They've chosen some beautiful roads round there instead of taking the flatter, less interesting options. The Cowesby to Malton and Osmotherly to Helmsley via Hawnby sections are particularly good cycling roads. That is a good campsite at Castle Howard although it's decades since I stayed there.

You're right about the Osmotherly to Helmsley road, its fantastic, but unfortunately at this time of year it can get really busy with drivers giving you very little space, forcing you to stop and pull over. Always seems to happen on some of the tough little uphill sections as well.

I can imagine. It was in the 70s and 80s that I was riding those roads, and traffic was far lighter. I'm not so sure I'd have taken up cycling if I was born in the UK in the 21st century. France is a different animal and it's still a great pleasure here even though the lungs sometimes don't agree.

The London to Edinburgh ride makes sense. Was interesting seeing people having a rest at the side of the road but weird the amount we saw in a short space of time late at night.

£20 per night on the site, caravan, two adults with electric, 2 for 1 entry into Castle Howard grounds too.
