Cycling and Wasps

Just wondering what the cyclists do on here to stop Wasps flying into your cycle helmet and stinging. Happened to me yesterday, fck me it was sore, cars behind must of thought I was going mad as I pulled the helmet off and through it to the ground whilst cycling, being bald probably did not help either 😂

I wear a cycling cap under my helmet and that helps also think you can get some sort of insect net to put inside your lid but not certain??

Not good I'd imagine, but then I don't wear a helmet - better than getting one in the mouth though.
I don't wear a helmet either but was contemplating it after yesterday's ride, coming down a large hill doing 40ish & I saw a massive bumble bee flying along just before it smacked into my forehead. Surprisingly painful. It isn't the first time it has happened either.

Hadn't thought about the risk of getting a stinging insect stuck in the helmet.

I have only just taken up cycling, got most of the things i need for now except for some glasses to stop bugs getting in my eyes. I hadn't even thought about wasps getting in my helmet, so something else to think about now.

I am just about to go out for ride now, knowing my luck i will get stung by a wasp today now that i have read this thread.

Any recommendation for glasses that are not too expensive, i don't want anything too dark, they are mainly just to stop bugs getting in my eyes, but a bit of sun protection would be nice as well. Been looking online at photochromic glasses, but decent ones seem to be a bit expensive, was only wanting to spend £20-£30.

Costs a fortune this cycling lark with all the extras you need to buy, still need to get lights, mudguards and tyres for when the winter comes.

Put a bit of clingfilm or foil on the inner if its a problem. It might make your head sweat a bit mind, I would have thought the chances of it happening again are miniscule, although never zero.

Have a look on Planet X. You'll have to pay postage mind which is a bit of a swizz, but they usually have some decent deals on.

I just use safety glasses from B and Q for my Mountain Biking. Just as good as over expensive branded ones from bike/sports shops.

Regarding wasps in helmets, it's that rare an occurrence it's not worth worrying about. The only insects worth worrying about are ticks if you're doing the kind of riding that exposes you to them.

Always wear a helmet for cycling, been cycling for 30 years and never been stung but must have swallowed thousands of insects over that time.

After coming off and hitting my head off the road, I can say that I probably wouldn't be here had I not been wearing a helmet.

Lucking the worst damage was a fractured elbow, but at least I'm still here to tell the tale.

Similar to me I broke my neck of femur and had to have metal rods in my leg and took 6 months to walk properly again but my consultant said the helmet probably saved my life.

bike riding always comes with its downside

Tourists
Pedestrians
Tractors
Potholes
Rain
Cow pats

but I’ve never had insects disrupt my cycling. Some insect repellent might do the job— surely it’s minor risk.

I just used Amazon for the glasses, nothing special just needed to stop the bugs too.
I’ve only just taken it up over the last few months and have probably spent more on the extras than I did on the bike already.

I tend to get stung on the body more than the head!

You might want to change your helmet for a less vented model or see if you can buy a mesh to go behind the vents at the front. I think you used to be able to get on for the Kask Mojito so there must be other versions around for other helmets.

I changed from a Kask Valegro to a Protone as the former was far too vented and every bug would get in there!

Not picking on you specifically Coluka but a lot of people saying it probably won't happen again. I would say I get stung about 5 or 6 times a year and even on every ride there is some sort of large bug that flies into my helmet! I must be very unlucky lol.

Bolle Contour safety glasses. You can get them with a variety of lens shades, less than a tenner.

I can't say I've ever been stung whilst on a bike, even cycling through a swarm of bees/wasps once....but I aint bald
