There are some posters on here who are very, very good at achieving clarity and avoiding ambiguity. Most of us, though, are less able to do that and so can leave doubts about both our exact meaning and, most important, the spirit and tone of our posts.

Emoji are more often used as a signal of the poster’s intent; a signpost to remove some of the grey area that can occur. So if I add , it doesn’t been I think I’m being hilarious, just that the spirit and tone of what I have written is meant to be taken as humerous and not serious.

It also means I try too hard to be witty and likeable sometimes

I have never, ever realised (or even thought about whether) emojis reflect degrees of funniness !
