Covid: "UK’s worst ever public health failures’:1000s unnecessary lost lives [Media]

Amid all the corruption, although incompetence, all the deceit, all the autocratic power grabs, perhaps the most frightening thing about this government is a sociopathic lack of humility and human decency
This isn't Tory v Labour or right v left. This is right v wrong

They never apologise for anything, pretty sure they're under strict orders not to. Public school playground rules, never apologise, never accept responsibility, never show "weakness".

Think the closest I've ever heard was something along the lines of "I'm sorry you feel like we need to apologise".

I've recently finished reading Failures of State - The Inside Story of Britain's Battle with Coronavirus. It is written by Jonathan Calvert and George Arbuthnot, both Sunday Times journalists so obviously not frothing at the mouth, swivel eyed loons. It is an amazingly detailed examination of the actions or inactions of this Government and the abject failure of leadership at so many levels. This report from the Select Committee only scratches the surface of the level of ignorance, indifference and downright ineptitude of the Government and some of it's advisers. I was getting so angry and upset reading it, that I could only do a few pages at a time. It is of little wonder, that despite being given notice and prior warnings of what was to come , that we have at this time the highest number of deaths in Europe. So preventable and so sad.

Its appalling - but nothing should surprise us.
For all those who have lost loved ones, friends, neighbours, workmates.
For all those barred from attending to those dying in Care Homes and Hospitals - and not allowed to pay their last respects - even to hold their hands.
Its a national disgrace that we let this shower of [insert as appropriate] get away with shoving billions up the arzes of their mates in the name of Test and Trace, and who refuse to take any responsibility for the abject collective failure of the most incompetent Government of modern times.
If it isnt clear now - collectively we have been conned - and still some believe Billy Bunter did his best.

Now the good news:
Hyper-inflation is on its way.
Hundreds of thousands of children were pushed below the "poverty line" by the cut in Universal Credit by multi-millionaire Richy Richies.
Fuel bills are expected to increase by over 30%+
The elderly, the vulnerable and the least well off are facing a choice of heating or eating.
The "Winter Fuel Allowance" [for the elderly] isnt going up, so wont even cover the increased cost of heating and lighting this winter.
Foodbanks report a shortage in donations.

Jolly good show.(n)

The only thing that the government got right was vaccine rollout. They approved it for use before it was signed off by health regulators, and they did so out of desperation. To try an avoid an even more disturbing death toll.

Imagine the situation we would have been in had it not been as effective. It is likely that they would have had 1 million deaths on their hands.

Boris and his sick bunch of bandits should be run out of town for a catalogue of catastrophic decisions. Every thing they touch turns to stink and corruption.

I still find it hard to comprehend how many gullible people in the UK swallowed his lies. That is the biggest concern.

Many continue to do so, that's probably even more alarming.

He'd still quite probably win an election if one was held now. Utterly staggering.

Believe me I'm not wishing to remove any blame whatsoever from the shower that are in charge but if an election was held, honestly I think they would get in again so I'm afraid the British public are as culpable as the politicians they elect.

There was a debate on here about Tony Blair and how toxic he now is because of the Iraq invasion, surely this imitation of a leader who is in charge now must have the same amount of blood, if not more on his hands???

This country is fooked.

Not forgetting major disruption to children's education at all age groups.
A child mental health crisis of which this country has never seen and shows no sign of tacking head on.
Tens of thousands of people effectively forced out of good jobs into zero contract or gig work.

I forgot about the shortage of qualified nurses and doctors.
Oh....and the huge hole in the supply of care assistants and support workers - created by brexit, the "hostile environment" and the complicated obstructive visa system, preventing freedom of movement - oops, we arent in the EU any more.

All of us 'lockdown lovers', as we became known, were saying much of what this report says went wrong. Even Tories like Rory Stewart and Jeremy Hunt were urging a much more cautious approach early on.
All the way through we've had the 'we are following the science' line, but for me at least, it's been followed when it suits them. For a novel virus like this we should have been looking to countries with experience of them, not treating it or comparing it to something like the flu.
I've said it many times on here that we lack leadership and the failure of Johnson to even comment on this report, let alone do anything to get ahead of the winter situation just shows up that lack of leadership.

Amazing some of the comments on TV today about this - my fave is that it's ok to say all of this with hindsight. I clearly remember 'the public' locking down early in March when the Government didn't. To be honest I can recall at the time hundreds of voices pointing all these mistakes out at the time they were happening.

No wonder Johnson went on holiday. He should face a criminal investigation of some kind.
Saw a tweet yesterday.

If you were critical of them before the lockdowns you were negative, if you were critical in the midst of the crisis you were unpatriotic and now they say that it's easy to judge in hindsight.

I can't beleive how poor these c**nts are

A bit of common sense would have gone a long way at the start of the pandemic. It didn't need a scientist or didn't need a maths professor. It required someone with o level maths to run the numbers and a strong leader with a bit of common sense. This pandemic hasn't been difficult to predict nor to manage. It has gone exactly where anyone with basic arithmetic thought it would go.

You are exactly right. Common sense is what was lacking. They obviously don't teach that in Eton.

It's quite frustrating because as long as they keep denying anything and everything that's gone wrong, it's likely to delay our coming out of this fully, as they wont admit to any mistakes being made.

It seems like, despite the number of live cases, we are 'going back to normal'.

I hope that the vaccination levels offer enough protection as to allow the NHS to cope, because I think any more lockdowns will be a massive shock to the system for most people.

I think a lockdown is inevitable this winter, unfortunately. I think it will happen for 2 reasons. Firstly we are seeing 3 times the infection rate than at the same point last year, but half the number of deaths. If that correlation stacks up over time, by mid-winter we will have 100,000's of infections every day and hundreds of deaths every day. Bare in mind that with a three times the infections daily, we are still seeing half the deaths. Let that metric sink in a bit, particularly if you think the pandemic is over, not saying you do Unravel, btw.

The second reason is that I think the government want to trigger a general election next year and coming out of lockdown will give them a popularity bounce. In addition if the election is triggered during lockdown, with limited campaigning the tories will control the media narrative which will be the only narrative during a lockdown.

Oh the reason I think there will be a GE next year is that energy price rises and food shortages are not going to be teething problems of brexit, but a reality. Johnson will want to get an election in before the public wake up to the fact that this isnt teething problems that will eventually be ironed out.

I can see Johnson going back to the polls in the run up to Christmas again in 2022.

They can just about keep battling away on the various fronts that they have decided to fight against.

I think they can keep on pretending they're doing a decent job to enough of the population and where they aren't blame Covid and the EU.

As for this year going into next. I'm not sure that they will lockdown, unless they absolutely have to - leaving it too late as before.

Labour need to get on the front foot as soon as possible. I don't like or dislike Starmer but I think he's pretty devoid of personality and they need a leader who can start afresh and the public can recognise. I'd either try and parachute Burnham in or get Dan Jarvis to go for the leadership after he relinquishes his mayoralty early next year. I'm not that bothered about the internal machinations of Labour and my ideal would be a progressive coalition next time out. It works well elsewhere and with current polling, we're not a million miles from that.
