Could the World Cup in Qatar Actually be Really Brilliant?

There probably isn't one single fan going to the World Cup who wants a beer in the stadium anyway unless you're corporate, of course..

'Also, apparently the 1990 Italia World Cup was really brilliant as well but that was more for the hooliganism and the Italian police brutality towards England fans.'

Apart from Wales and England matches I won't be watching, and I shouldn't be watching those games. I wonder if the total number of goals scored will exceed the number of workers who died building the stadia?
I can help you there. Not even 5% of the number.

It's not about the beer it's the way the Qatar state treat people. The rulling authorities dont tolerate criticism at all and from what we have seen so far it looks a shambles certainly for travelling fans.

It won't be brilliant due to all the issues that go with it. But I will be watching the England games, they're a group of men sent to do a job in difficult circumstances so deserve my support

Morning update. As TeaCider has just pointed out, the ‘brilliance’ continues with one of the most brilliantly stupid speeches by Gianni Infantino.
Cardiffdaffs. Thank you for the respect. Out of context of the article it is a very odd comment. In context it makes more ‘sense’. 3 minute read.
Entirely possible it won’t be brilliant.

On a different issue, I can't see anything other than a lot of heat exhaustion for players and teams not used to these conditions.
I have looked at the weather over a week and its never lower than 27. In the heat of the day its usually 33, 34. These are shade temps. If you are in that sun then add 7 degrees for how it feels. The early game of the day is 1 pm local , in direct sun probably. The second kick off the day is 4 pm and that looks like half before dusk then flood lights prob as light fades but the temp doesn't. One reporter said he was allowed to go around a pitch and could feel the air condition units but really didn't know how much of that would get to the players on it.
Training - One team has already changed their early training schedule to move back further into the night as they could tell it was too hot , might have been Wales. All training will be done in non air conditioned places. Group games for a team are 1 every 4 days so when you not training what you gonna do, just sit in hotel air conditioned rooms. Might be quite boring. A usual world cup would have teams having a day off and an afternoon trip en mass to a local attraction. There's not enough attractions fro 32 teams and all supporters in 1 city .
As we get to the knockouts , can see players dropping like flies as that's 4 games in 12 days , really can't see any European team lasting to the semis. Hope I'm wrong .

At least this ensures players won't be wearing T-Shirts with messages on under their shirts!

The football could still be brilliant; I'm leaning against this as I don't really think the players are very well prepared or focused on it, but stranger things have happened.

However, it's very clear now that the the World Cup is about more than what happens on the pitch. Like it or not, the tournament IS a political football and on ethical, social, and humanitarian levels, the tournament is already a failure.

Was Italia '90 brilliant?
I'd put it to you that the football was awful. Apart from England doing surprisingly well, where were the good matches? On the pitch, it was a tournament of negative football, low scoring, and cynical fouls fouls from the first match until the final. I'd have it a close tie with South Africa 2010 as the worst world cup from a purely footballing perspective that I can remember.

As a kid, I loved it: the first world cup I really remember. However, almost all my memories, other than England, are of things other than football: Pavarotti, the glamorous stadia (which I've said elsewhere look really shabby by comparison now), Gazza crying, World in Motion. Normally after a tournament, I can picture a dozen or so goals in my head. Italia 90 I can recall goals in England matches, Cameroon vs Argentina, and virtually nothing else that happened on the pitch.

Excellent post Boro_Interlinked. So on top of all the other brilliant nonsense there might be brilliant heat exhaustion for the players, brilliantly interrupted training, brilliant boredom, brilliantly environmently friendly air conditioning. Brilliant! Really brilliant!🤔

As someone who wasn’t even 1 when Italia 90 happened, it’s sometimes odd watching highlights of the tournament because some of the quality of the games seem poor in retrospect.
A huge part of what makes a World Cup isn’t the football itself, I can’t see this one being great despite what happens on the pitch because of everything off it.

Apparently around the edge of the pitch it’s a nice temperature, go a few metres in and the air conditioning does nothing. Maybe a lot of wing play in games.
