Coronavirus good news thread

Excellent news coming out of Israel.
I do hope people like AET are reading threads like this rather than the negative stuff people carelessly post.

Wow if that figure holds up it really is a massive game changer.

The best bit in my eyes is that there are very mild symptoms in those that have got it. I think the Oxford trials showed similar.

if this is the case, it should mean a huge weight off the shoulders once vaccinated even if you are in the small minority that catch it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there hasn't yet been anyone that has had one oxford vaccine that has died yet (from covid, after allowing a month to build immunity), whether that's been from one jab or two. Some still catch it but it doesn't kill them.

Yep I seem to remember (and this is maybe going back to October, so things may have changed) that no one who’d had the vaccine and caught it was hospitalised, so hopefully that has remained the same since

Yeah, actually I remember that from back then, you're right, although that's not what I was on about (you've jogged my memory thought). I read it again on twitter in the last couple of days I think, it was a recent article and from someone high up as far as I can remember.

Will be an absolute game changer of monumental proportions, if that's the case. Not getting covid would be better, but if it has it's hospitalization and death capability taken away then that's a good 90% of the problem solved.

That combined with our case numbers falling off a cliff, will put us well below the excess deaths soon enough, and this time next month 10m of the most vulnerable (including some key workers) will have had a months worth of immunity built up at least. Should be some exceptionally quick changes coming soon.

Also, first look at real world data looking positive for our delayed dose strategy -

Public Health England are expected to formally publish findings within the next fortnight.
“I've just come off JCVI and we're looking at these real-time vaccine effectiveness figures, it's really early stages yet, but it does look like our first dose strategy is proving to be a good one,” said Prof Harnden.
"And the early signs are very promising from the data that we've made the right decision on this."

Apologies, any idea what they are basing their confidence on if it is not looking at hospital admissions or death data? Case rates falling significantly in vaccinated age group maybe? I'm supportive of their strategy generally but would we not expect cases to be falling in these people due to lockdown anyway?

Thinking out loud does it show in the ONS infection figures for the higher age groups now as a reduction in cases?

Good news on Novovax being another strong vaccination. Imperial college have another candidate too which was showing good efficacy as well as Sanofi. Be a huge pot to choose from shortly I hope.

Shame no hints on basis of confidence. But it says report coming out in two weeks.

Not sure to be honest, only what they’ve said in the article. I guess more info will be revealed in due course, hopefully next couple of weeks.

Johnson and Johnson single dose phase 3 trial results should be released next week too 🤞🏻

The Imperial vaccine is exciting due to the technology, although in this article it suggests there won’t be any news on it imminently, apart from maybe phase 1 and 2 results. Looks like they are changing course with this one -

‘Given the number of vaccines already approved and being distributed, rather than proceed with an immediate phase III efficacy trial in the UK, the group will focus on emerging and longer-term coronavirus threats such as variants and mutations, and more powerful booster vaccines.’

Thanks, good info. I think Imperial were due to start phase 2/3 back in October and it was delayed multiple times. I wondered what caused that as they seemed ahead of the game initially with their tech.

Johnson and Johnson results are in -
Decent levels of efficacy

The single dose Jansen one is good news and they are trialling it further to see if giving a second dose improve efficacy further and / or longer protection
