Converting attacking mf into negative clones

Why do we seem to excel at taking midfield players with healthy goal tallies at their previous clubs and converting them into identikit one dimensional defensive clones.
As before their Boro moves these would all be considered attack minded central mf who scored goals -
Clayton ( long range specialist)
Saville ( into double figures and seen as a no 10/8 figure for millwall and NI)
Howson a box to box mf for Norwich and Leeds that chipped in with his share of goals.
mcnair - aleading light at sunlun who again provided a goal threat.
yet would you be surprised now to find any of them - used now as a holding def m or in some cases as a make weight centre half.

I posted this yesterday morning as a pre morning rant but if I think it’s odd how prolific players appear to be before we sign them

I don't think its 'the problem', its more of a symptom of being a bit cr@p.

Your goalscoring midfielders don't score, your wingers don't create, your strikers don't score etc.

Nicky Bailey went the same way back in Mowbray's time, albeit from a division below.
