Congratulations Tom Daley

Just watched the main news. All about Tom Daley. I get he's famous for years but Matty Lee was just a footnote.

ah well. Even the current Sir Matthew was once a footnote to Sir Steve. Maybe Matty will be a future Sir Matthew to the, now inevitable, Sir Tom...

Great stuff and well deserved, a proper example to all young sports people that hard work and perseverance are as essential as talent to succeed, the scrutiny and spotlight Daley has been under from such an early age has I’m sure weighed heavy at times which must make him eventually achieving his lifelong goal all the sweeter.

It was mentioned on the Olympics tonight that people thought Tom Daley had already won an olympic gold, I was one of them, he seems to have been around forever, chuffed for the lad & as coluka rightly points out, Matty too

Ok so I’m gay. And I’ve struggled with it my whole life. You realise you don’t fit in from quite early

Do not underestimate what Tom Daley winning a gold medal has done for gay people everywhere.

for anyone growing up gay and knowing they don’t fit in.

and of course he lost his father to cancer.

I’ve found the comments that we are ignoring matty lee’s achievement childish and not worthy of comment. Wish I could say no homophobic undertones but I do
Wonder.

night all

AET I don’t think there was any undertone to that whatsoever. Especially as the 2 posters Coluka and Cardiff who happened to mention Matty Lee ( who also does deserve praise) also posted above that that they were delighted for Daley especially after the trolling he took in 2016. Do read the whole thread.

I meant comments I’d read on Twitter etc sorry I really should have been clearer - seen some stuff written on there which is intended to belittle Daley - the shot of the tears in his eyes etc. But hey

I honestly think if you want balance you should stay away from twitter. Its so polar and hate filled that you come away from it feeling angry at the world.

There is a huge bias to remember the negative and seek it out on there too which doesn't help us either.

Amazing perseverance and achievement.

chuffed for the lad, always seemed a good, well mannered kid, the media pressures when he broke through were immense and the sense that he somehow had failed his career when he didn't win a medal at 14 were stupid.

He then 'only' managed bronze in London and again in Rio and his career seemed unfulfilled, the Francis Jeffers of olympic diving. I think like many when his attention turned to presenting Splash and he seemed to be distracted as a social media gay ambassador, I thought well that's his career winding down. I was surprised to see him at these games, but what an amazing journey to finally achieve that dream and a great full stop to a long and winding road of a career. Well done lad.

Whilst I admire Toms perseverance and it’s a great story starting so young I feel the attention he gets is not consistent with the achievement.

these two won gold in the diving in Rio and I would hazard a guess nobody has really heard of them
Jack Laugher and Chris Mears

I find it strange the accolades Tom is given surely theirs is a greater achievement? And as others have mentioned Tom’s team mate (what’s his name? Exactly)
