Compendium of Games

I had to google it to find out about it. Know of most the games but never knew about the compendium.

Trivial Pursuit has always been my thing especially at Xmas, think I’ve got about 20 editions and still buy it whenever they bring out another version. I used to play TP against my mum every Xmas but I haven’t played it since she died nearly 2 years ago. Still got editions in the cellophane that I’ll keep sealed until hopefully I can play with my son.

I realised how old I when my son's mates came round and had no idea what I was talking about.

It was always a key Xmas present. Draughts being the big favourite .

You were posh if you got a compendium of games.
And even posher if you got a monopoly board.
All we had was snakes and ladders on the back of a selection box.
And maybe a Dandy and Beano annual. ;-))
Those were the days !

Selection box? You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

Don’t forget the hazel and Brazil nuts at the bottom of the sock.

Whoa there, you WERE posh.
All we got was an apple and orange and a few dates. Yuk !.

It was bloody cold n’all.
I remember we used to gather round a candle on Christmas morning.
Me, mam and four brothers.

And when it got really cold me dad used to light it !

Nuts weren’t posh when I was a lad and I lived in a paper bag In the middle of t’ road.

They have been a traditional stocking filler for over 900 years

Christmas STOCKINGS

In the 12th Century, French nuns, inspired by the legend of St Nicholas – who gave gold to the poor – began leaving stockings full of fruit, including tangerines, and nuts at the houses of poor people. The toe of the stocking would contain an apple for good health and the heel a tangerine because in those days they were very rare.

Actually Salted peanuts were an American invention and weren’t introduced to Britain until 1953. Brazil’s and Hazels have been traditional Xmas staple since the 1800s.
