Club shop

I can sort of understand them not wanting to have left over stock at the end of the season. God Forbid they have to sell some kits of cheaper.

But the stock they get is not even close to lasting to near the end of the season. I mean the away shirt stock lasted one day. It's actually laughable.

Obviously it isn't relegation/Garry Monk/lack of parachute payments that is the reason we're struggling to compete after all. We still haven't recovered from having to discount a few Adidas shirts.
We could have 50m in the bank and I don't think it would change the way retail side of the club would be run.

We are selling out at full price in a day with 2 out 3 of the kits, so as business why would you not buy more to return a bigger profit.

Because they would rather increase season tickets and walk up prices year on year ! Than utilise the retail side of things.

Exactly. Gibson doesn't seem satisfied unless he is getting as much cash as he possibly can out of supporters. Selling kits off cheap at the end of the season like we did when we had Adidas wouldn't sit right with him, it's not how he operates.

If he has an issue with surplus stock at the end of the season then that's fine, however the amount of stock we're getting in at the minute is absolutely nowhere enough to match the demand. So many people are willing to pay full price for the 3rd/away kit, yet are not able to do so. Many of the same people will then use Chinese sites such as DH Gate as an alternative (a much cheaper alternative). Once those people do this it's difficult to get them back as customers, particularly when the quality from these places is no worse (and in some cases better) than what you get from the club shop.

From an organisation as big as MFC the whole thing is embarrassing and I actually feel sorry for the head of retail who is being made to look massively incompetent and it's more than likely due to Gibson's bizarre way of operating.

Apart from when he isn't because the club kits are out of stock.
The point is they're out of stock because anything that is available, whether it's tickets, replica kit etc, supporters must pay through the nose. He couldn't bear the thought of having excess stock come the end of the season and a supporter actually getting something at a discounted price. He'd rather just not get enough stock.

A lot of supposition in there

Gibson has many admirable qualities but changing his mind in the face of evidence and argument isn't one of them.

I think on some level he resents the amount of money he puts he in.

Feels like he thinks why should anyone get cheaper kits or tickets when he's putting in millions?

Those small numbers come from articles like this which is based on a completely different way of selling than we have. In the above United only get a small mount from each shirt but it's because they get paid upfront about £200m by Adidas to be allowed to make their kits. For Middlesbrough we have a completely different way of selling. Cost to make will be similar, manufacturer costs will be different and probably a much lower number because we aren't getting paid up-front £200m by Errea. The rest we do ourselves because we only sell via our club shop so aren't losing part of the sales price to the retailer or distribution.
I read an article on this recently which surprised me because it said that the vast majority of EFL clubs only get about £5 per shirt. What the club actually gets is a royalty payment for each shirt sold for licensing the club crest etc to the manufacturer (I appreciate that Boro may have a different arrangement).

Southampton tried to get a bigger slice of the pie a few seasons ago by manufacturing their own shirts but found that by the time they'd factored in the cost and hassle of manufacturing, distribution etc it wasn't worth the hassle.

The thrust of the article was that unless you're a big Premier :League club the money you're going to make out of kit sales would probably cover Haaland's wages for a couple of weeks but you don't want to be left with a load of stock.

(I was also surprised to learn recently that Haaland is a Yorkshire lad).

We make more than £5 a shirt.. and we are never left with any stock.
