Climate change protests

It's irrelevant who they target or if the outcome of targeting the general public means more pollution on that day - it is 100% about getting media coverage.

I had no idea who Insulate Britain was until they protested - now I do. And even more what they say makes sense. That kind of reach is priceless. You are a moron if you disregard the argument they make just because a few thousand cars were stuck on the M25 for a day.

I presume at some point the motorists turned their engines off anyway - I bet there was less pollution that day than a normal one.

Think most of us understand the issue, but the average working person really isnt the one to turn the protest towards
I think this is the key point - we did some research at work recently to uncover trends in thinking around climate change.

Broadly three categories:
Those who are aware but don't care
Those who are aware but feel they can't make a difference
Those who are aware and do as much as they can (but still largely feel it falls on others, corporates etc).

I think the awareness war has largely been won but how to translate that into tangible actions is much trickier. To actually make a difference would require (imo) governmental intervention as the activities would permeate every part of our lives. If only there was a template for governments amending our way of life in the face of an existential threat ;)

Are the greens as a stand alone party realistically going to make that change? They only hold one parliamentary seat don’t they?
Yes because despite the claims on here about 'everyone knows the problem', in reality people keep voting Tory, and the Tories couldn't give a toss about real change because it hits them in the pocket.

So rather than decent long term policies benefitting all we get short term piecemeal projects where the cabinet buddies can filter of millions of pounds of public money.

There is no integrated transport policy, there is no scheme for individual households to create green energy (which would be a kick in the teeth for power companies, but go a decent way towards a cleaner environment), and as the protesters rightly say, no moves to insulate homes.

So we know the problem but don't want to address it. Our inability to act on what we see as a problem creates the ideal climate for the protest groups to emerge, and rather than invite them to the policy setting table, we label them 'the enemy'.

I got caught up in this on Monday, supposed to be on first site at 9.30 a.m. Got there at 3.15p.m. Lost 3 more site visits that day. Same again this morning, managed to divert and miss the majority of it. Understand peoples rights to peaceful protest, and I get the cause, but listening to their cheif spokesperson interviewed, to be honest he came across as a complete knob, with limited inteligence or communication skills. The way to get this or any other government (except communist) to react and change policy, is to get the public and influential business on side, from the scenes I witnessed and people's reactions like me who got caught up in it, they won't get public on board with these actions and influential business won't want to be associated with the negative media coverage. Completely messed up what is probably a very good cause imho

Yes i agree, increased pollution in one place on one day is utterly irrelevant in the scheme of things

We have been broadly aware for over 30 years - how long does it take to make significant action?

How many houses do not have 150mm loft insulation?
How many houses do not have double glazing? - the more recent the better
How many houses do not have insulated external doors?
How many houses do not have wall insulation?

Thats before we start on the heating

How many houses have boilers more than 15 years old?
Radiators that are partially internally blocked up?

We must waste around 25% of our energy in this country - we have a lot of older housing that has not been fully modernised - thats without going to ground heat pumps

A new boiler and radiators took around 30% off our gas use - thats £240/year plus I stopped my heating insurance £240/year - £480/saving - over 9 years money back. And we have reduced carbon emissions. Some people can even get some of this work done for free, but how many know about it. I got all the loft insulation done for free through Governement grant and it was not means tested.

but listening to their cheif spokesperson interviewed

And here you have shown why it is important that you were held up today. Without your inconvenience you, and many others, would never have heard of their chief spokesperson.

It is irrelevant what you think of them really, it's the free media they need, and that that is what they got. We'll look back on these people in years to come and either thank them or wish we had listened.

I couldn't get any help insulating the loft , they told me it's because I don't claim any benefits

Any chance i can blag a new boiler on these schemes? I'm sure mines on its way out.

I'd stick in a eco 'thingy' one if it's cheaper with a government grant or something. I'm always getting judgey looks as I start my hothatch from neighbours who have not one but 2 Tesla cars (flash c*nts).

I can brag about my eco boiler.... Although they'd probably get two😂

Another argument for proportional representation where every vote makes a difference???
The Greens seem to do quite well in Germany.

i don't think they can give you judgy looks with their 2 x brand new cars. It'll take a long time until the carbon footprint of manufacturing a vehicle gets outweighed by fossil fuel reduction.

'a few thousand cars were stuck on the M25 for a day'

That is tantamount to imprisoning thousands of people, and no doubt there were many stories. If you were one of them your view would be different, I suspect.
Sorry to be so moronic.

It’s not tantamount to imprisoning anyone. Your moronic comment is not forgiven 😉

Of course I forgive you 👍🏻
