Classic comedies vs today

I can't believe we're onto page 2 of the thread and nobody has mentioned Still Game!

70s: Porridge, Fawlty Towers, The Good Life, Open All Hours
80s: Only Fools & Horses, Blackadder
90s: Alan Partridge, The Day Today, The Vicar of Dibley, Father Ted, Spaced
00s: The Office, Peep Show, Gavin & Stacey, The Inbetweeners
10s: Fleabag, Friday Night Dinner

Generally I don't do American comedy though two of my favourites are Curb Your Enthusiasm and I also loved Frasier.

A shout out too for Minder which wasn't really a comedy but certainly had some funny moments in it - was one of my favourite programs growing up.

My top 3 though would be Still Game, Blackadder and Fawlty Towers.

It maybe an age thing but the comedies of the past were far superior to those of today.
Some absolute classic comedies of days gone by still make me laugh even though I've seen them many times whereas today's I tend to switch off.
Is it an age related thing or simply that today's comedies are just not up to stratch?

Problem with nostalgia is you select only the best bits. Just watch an episode of Top of the Pops from the 80's and any thoughts that the 80's were a great decade for music soon disappear. You tend to distil the best out of a long period and then look back with fondness.

For every 'Eton Rifles' there was a 'Birdie Song'; for every 'Blackadder' there was an 'Up the Elephant and Round the Castle'.

Comedy is more niche these days, Gavin and Stacey at Christmas a real exception to that rule.

Used to love Fools and Horses and Blackadder growing up and Early Doors, Partridge and Royal Family as I got older. 70s classics like Fawlty Towers and Likely Lads seem to stand the test of time so no reason why today's stuff won't with those who enjoy it now.

Of more recent stuff I enjoy This Country and Ladhood, both bbc3 offerings

I was just going to mention This Country which is brilliant, 3rd series starts on Monday. I also really liked People Just Do Nothing which was also a mockumentary.

I love most mentioned , but often feel some great shows are overlooked:

Ripping Yarns
Yes minister
The royle family
Pheonix nights
Dad's Army
'Allo 'Allo
One foot in the grave

No love for these?

The Royle Family is a work of art. The more you really delve into it the acting and set up is superb. When i watch it i truly feel like im back in my mams house in the 90s.

Ladhood is really good. Another BBC 3 offering which has received a lot of praise is man like mobeen. I thought it was ok but ladhood is better imo.

Blackadder,
Fools and Horses,
MONTY PYTHON (all time favourite).

I agree, the new comedies on TV are poorly written and a bit too dumbed down.
