Classic comedies vs today

The comedy show I was kinda brought up on as a child was blackadder (apart from series 1 which I didn’t see for years and understand why) and then stuff such as only fools and father ted. They are my top 3 comedy shows and have seen them numerous times.

followed by such as game on, bottom, men behaving badly and red dwarf.

a lot of my friend growing up hated blackadder but I think that it’s cause I’m born 84 so when I was at school it had basically been and gone and had more of a intellect comedy behind it rather than just plain daft

I hate new comedy such as mrs brown boys, Miranda, not going out, citizen khan etc.

question is what yours and do you think modern day comedy will be still be repeated in 20,30,40 years time like the above

Blackadder is pure genius
(btw I also like series 1 - before Ben Elton came and told Richard Curtis to change Edmund and baldrick around).
The ending of black adder goes fourth I think is one of the greatest moments in british tv history - perfection.

I didn’t see original until probably late teens early 20s when I had seen the others multiple times. I couldn’t get used to it

A lot of old comedy I find a bit too slapstick for my liking, and the likes of Miranda etc try to copy that format.

I do like father ted though. I'd probably say my tv comedy taste is more US sitcom/drama based.

Fools & horses I must have watched don't know how many times & laugh all the time, the ones you've mentioned out of them all I haven't broke into a grin never mind laughed

Fawlty Towers,Blackadder,Porridge,Fools & Horses pure genius.
Mash and Cheers the best from the US.

I love most mentioned , but often feel some great shows are overlooked:

Ripping Yarns
Yes minister
The royle family
Pheonix nights
Dad's Army
'Allo 'Allo
One foot in the grave

No love for these?

I missed one foot in the grave!

love Phoenix nights. Royal family I did but thought it tailed off after a while

Faulty Towers
Married With Children
Father Ted

I think I prefer older shows to modern day ones, love the 70's shows like Steptoe, Dad's Army, Some Mothers Do Have Em

Modern family probably the best of the current bunch, but even that's losing its way now.

Plenty of modern comedies stand up. IT crowd, the office, gavin & Stacey, inbetweeners, detectorists, peep show, afterlife etc.

People often have a fondness for what they grew up with. Every generation thinks they had the best music, films and comedy - probably not a lot of 18 year olds these days would rate only fools and horses if it was aired today or watched on Netflix etc compared to the comedy of their day.

Mrs browns boys is awful imo but plenty better about

"mrs brown boys, Miranda, not going out, citizen khan"

I love comedy but have never seen any of those shows. I've actually heard on individual occasions that all of those shows are terrible (especially Citizen Khan and Mrs Browns Boys) and not funny at all unless you're very old. I'd suggest looking outside of the BBC because there's some great shows out there.

I agree with all of these. There are plenty of modern comedies that are excellent although most of these finished more than 10 years ago now. I like a lot of the American comedies as well like The Office, Parks & Rec, Modern Family, Brooklyn 99 etc.

I do think comedies, especially on mainstream TV like BBC, are too safe now. There's too much fear of offending people. They still exist but they aren't going to be on at prime time.

In rough chronological order of getting 'into' them: Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, Father Ted, Game On, Men Behaving Badly, I'm Alan Partridge, Royle Family (before it got surrealist and rubbish at the end), The Office, Early Doors, Saxondale, Phoenix Nights, Bo Selecta, The Inbetweeners, Flight of the Concords, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Fresh Meat.

Wouldn't say I've got madly into anything 'new' for a few years but quite enjoyed things like London Irish, Derry Girls, After Life, Catastrophe, Back, Motherland, Mum, W1A/2012, Fleabag, Back to Life etc.

Also have to confess I still really like Friends and am just getting into Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Fleabag?

Watched an epsode of Love Thy Neighbour on YouTube recently to see if it was as racist as people make out/ I remembered it and it wasn't, really. More in the Alf Garnett mode. Surprisingly funny in places, too, even if it wasn't in the same league as comedies such as Rising Damp, Porridge, The Likely Lads etc.

Most of the light entertainment British Comedy is endearing, I didn't mind Black adder, but its format become repetitive and predictable with Baldrick getting slated or ridiculed by Black Adder and I dont think its aged well.
I will miss Rik Mayall /Ade Edmo comedy.

Few and far between now, the BBC just puts out shows for women dancing about come dancing was boring everyone to tears 45 years ago.
