Has anyone on here signed up with CityFibre on their new cable to the door broadband service? I’ve received an email saying it’s now available where I live (TS3), which finally gives me an alternative to Virgin’s rip off prices. Coincidentally, Virgin are now offering a discount with a new contract but it’s still only 200Mb instead of the 900Mb+ advertised download speed CityFibre offer and also more expensive. It sounds like a no brainier but I just want to be sure it’s reliable and as advertised before I risk being unable to work from home. The Virgin connection has been rock solid for me for over 20 years. I tried an ADSL connection for a year or so and it was virtually unusable. That’s what‘s holding me back.

Here’s the link if anyone wants to check it out.

At the risk of NOT actually answering your question..... I have just taken the plunge to have YouFibre installed. (TS23 area).
By the sound of it, it's the same fibre to door technology as your CityFibre.

It's taken me months to take the plunge as, like you I work from home and my kids would never forgive me if we kept loosing our WiFi signal in the house!

After a lengthly chat with a customer support agent I decided to sign up for their month to month contract. So I'll run youfibre and continue with virgin for a month before committing to an 18 month contract. £35 for 500mb. Make sure it is stable. And just as importantly, make sure my iptv runs without being blocked 😉

What concerned me was a statement in their small print: all legal streams will be unaffected (or words to that effect).
The person I spoke to confirmed that they may monitor the connection for traffic speeds and usage and if any illegal streams were detected, they would ask you to stop. That's it. I can use a vpn anyway if needs be.

Anyway, went in one there.... No I have no experience of CityFibre.

Oh well I hope it works out for you. The monitoring thing seems like standard anti piracy terms to me but you can never be too careful. As you said though, a decent VPN will sort that out. I’m not sure what else they expect people to be doing with a 500Mb connection. Even a genuine 4K stream should barely make a dent in it.

Cityfibre provide the fibre broadband through a local ISP.. Vodafone and talk talk are the larger one, but there will be smaller ones. Expect a high level of reliability for the broadband service, but make sure the USPS supplied router can handle the speeds and number of devices you want to hang on it. Cityfibre installation engineers are good at putting in the broadband where you want it, meaning it can be more central in the house. To me, it's a no brainer decision. if you can get it... Get it.

You seem to know what you're talking about.
What I will be losing with virgin is a wifi 6 router. Could I potentially get the new service providers connection but still use my virgin hub? (this is the YouFibre one)

Don't mean to hijack the thread but it's just a more general question based on the OP's post.

We got a letter through the door the other day from a company called zzoomm who are doing fibre to the door installs in TS9 in the not too distant future. Finally!

Virgin routers are gash anyway. The main reason that people struggle with regular dropouts and complain about speeds.

Dump it and get a decent mesh system for less than £100 and you'll never go back.

I'll look into that then.
Cheers.
Have edited to add a link for you to look into pal. Have installed mesh into 3/4 mates houses who were looking to leave virgin because of regular dropouts and they've realised the bulk of problems are the router.

You turn the router into modern mode and use the mesh as the router.

Unfortunately I don't have access to either Virgin or any of these new providers so I'm only working on a 150 mb connection but have zero issues with a mesh system installed using Vodafone

If you're taking youfibre out, look at the 1gb package. You can negotiate them down to £40/month and that package includes the eero 6 pro and 2 mesh nodes. The extra £5 a month from your current £35/month gives you double speed and saves you buying a separate mesh system

I was a Virgin/NTL customer for 20 years until last year. When I moved house Virging didn't cover the area (despite it being right next to a major road in Billingham). I reluctantly went with BT expecting it to be shocking. It turns out BT is far better than Virgin. I suspect City Fibre will be the same.

I’ll bet that the TS9 rollout doesn’t include Newton though. We are still on phone lines. Grrr.

Depends on your coverage I guess. When we moved to Ingleby we took bt out only they didn't do, and still don't do, fttp here so it was something outrageous like £38 a month via bt for 76mb. Only made palatable by about £200 cashback and ability to break contract if they put prices up, which they did 1 month later so we broke contract and took out again in the gf's name and got the cashback again. Other than that it would have been very poor value for money.

After that we were with various providers on the openreach network paying £22-25 a month for terrible speeds and bad equipment. Vodafone worst of the lot as make it hard to use your own router

Youfibre a breath of fresh air now. Having 1gb upload is insane

You're right about the coverage I suppose.

When I moved the house didn't need a Technician to attend. I literally just plugged in the equipment and it worked. In the old house Teams meetings when working from home were a pain for me. I was the person constantly dropping out. Not any more with BT.

The ISP should give information about their router on their websites. The majority provide WiFi 6 units now. You cannot reuse existing ISP supplied routers as these are hard configured. You can use a router you've bought. But you may have to work with the ISP to get a new one working, as the IP address will need to be logged on their systems. Also make sure any new router can handle the 1gig speed.
If you go on the city fibre website they have an excellent address checker on there.

Yea, I noticed that actually and its a decent set up for the minimal extra cost.

Virgin really are taking the pi$$ with their pricing structure.
