Chuba Akpom

I said he was good not sensational, for a £2.5m striker, based on what I have seen this season. He helped improve the whole team. At 26 he is coming up to his peak period and looks slightly improved on what he was 2 years ago.

I agree he will unlikely be a profilic goalscorer, but looked a nice compliment to Forss.

How long has Akpom been on the pitch? around 108 minutes? He was involved in 2 of our goals in that time.

One issue I’d have with his performances in the past two games would be that he’s just playing for a move. If he doesn’t get one and the window closes, I’d not be surprised if he dropped off again. He disappeared for most of his first season with us. Why wouldn’t he do it again? Where has this been for the past two years with us?

He was absolutely awful under Warnock. What was it, two goals in five months or something? Five in a season. Two in two to start and then… nothing for months and months? Something like that. Just because he’s got his head down now - which is much to his credit - doesn’t excuse the poor return we’ve had out of him.

Long may his current performances continue. But let’s not rewrite history with him.

You make it sound like he shouldn't be allowed to play until he has fully repented for being a flop under NW. Strange.

Not at all. I’ve said it’s much to his credit that he’s stepped up this season. I hope it continues. I’m just wondering where this has been since he signed and whether he’ll go missing again later on.

I’d also caution against changing or making judgments on players and managers two games into a season. He’s been generally awful since he signed and has a long way to go to prove himself here IMO. I hope he does it, I hope he keeps this up and I hope he puts a few goals away.

But the truth is he’s been a poor signing and given us next to nothing for the £3.5m plus wages up to now.

And I’d love to know how many of those criticising Wilder for not selecting him and trying to move him on this summer disagreed with the manager’s judgment at the time.

Maybe he has finally realised this is last chance saloon. We have no choice but to give him a go. Granted his record is very poor for the outlay, but let's see how he does in this last chance saloon!

I am only looking one game at a time and I would play him ahead of Watmore at present.

Players can change, I was not a big fan of Howson when he first came - a bit anonymous and that was a common comment at the time, but not now. He has actually got better in his 30s.

He showed more ability on Saturday than any of the three we had on loan last season. I think he might well have made the difference.
We lost. He didn’t score. Explain the love in?

Wilder didn’t plan to go this season with Chuba Akpom. He didn’t even take him on pre season. He’s been sold down the river by Gibbo, farce of a situation we’re in.

He’s already played a full season for us, scored 4. So two halves, a season, plus a fair few games when I was living in Hull too. He’s a dreadful striker. Would make a half decent winger or attacking mid, but is he **** a striker.

He’s only looking alright because he’s desperate for a club. Give him a full season he will miss chances that will cost us. I’ve seen him miss the target from 2 yards out countless times.
No. He played really well at QPR and rightly was applauded for this by the Boro away fans. He did exactly what was asked of him and along with Paddy McNair helped almost rescue a lost cause.
He has played really well. I don't see why we shouldn't recognise that fact without any BUTS.

I appreciate you have to tow the pro-Boro line to keep your contacts sweet, however he’s played alright (without scoring) for two periods. He has been utterly ***** the rest of his career.

He’s not good enough, no matter how much you or the gazette try to convince us he might be.

We won 1-0 in the half he played.

And therein lies the problem. He’s a striker who doesn’t score.

He’s looked busy. But he still hasn’t scored has he?
42 goals in 130 starts in his career, hell of a lot of sub appearances though approaching 100 sub appearances just in the league.

His issue is being able to play week in week out and contribute. He tends to have 2-4 games playing well then play like an absolute spud for 2 months, then a couple of good games, then poor gain. Like Watmore he's often much better from the bench.

Last season and 2 before that were his best with 9 goals in each season both in Greece and never a first choice striker in either season

Let's not pretend that the whole reason his career has been so underwhelming is lack of effort and he's playing well because he is trying at the moment. He hasn't shown any real quality over his entire career and a couple of unsurprisingly not terrible performances aren't enough to convince me that he's suddenly good enough to lead the line in a promotion chasing team.

We all know he won't get double figures this year. He'll be a continuation of least season's disaster class of a strike force.

We need better.
