Chris Wilder explains the Marcus Forss substitute....[Gazette]

Personally I thought the subs were about right. Bringing a young lad on to win a game for us in a high intensity situation (as it was at the time), could indeed damaged a young lads confidence. Imagine him missing a sitter for a win or to salvage a point with 2 minutes to go.

Putting crooks up top (where he's played previously at a point in the game when we were delivering balls from wide situations) seemed reasonable. Moving mcNair up to be more effective made sense to me too.
It kind of dispelled the theory of wilder being a 'one trick pony' too. Changing tactics and formation to go for a win is something I love about his attitude. He said from the start of his tenure - I'll always go for a win where I can. This reinforced this attitude for me.
It didn't pay off as we lost momentum in the last 20. If we had got the equaliser and / or winner we'd all be singing his praises here calling his changes a 'master stroke'.
It's fine margins in this league.
It can be looked at both ways....
Hopefully he learns that when you have the momentum then dont make changes which could lose the momentum...and just go for it with a young hungary lad who might just nail a goal for him.....momentum is everything in a game....

What was quite startling was the degree to which momentum shifted. From the first half where we were all at sea and panicking.
Then second half pretty much an onslaught until bringing Smith on which completely killed the game dead.
I don't think I've ever seen a team that can be so wildly inconsistent in the space of a match.

The five subs made on three occasions will completely change football, to an extent we haven't seen since the backpass rule. A team with a full squad will be able to make 2 changes before half time and change the game. Or you could make five changes at half time, or four and leave yourself one in case of injuries. If the team isn't playing well now you can just roll the dice again. Provided you have the squad for it.

it just seems incredibly poor management not to use Ikpeazu when we’re this short and just stick a CM up front instead. He will never be able to play this system we have so has no long term future here but surely he would have been a better option than Crooks and having to move 3 players to accommodate him
