'Chinese Virus'

"President Trump used the term "Chinese virus" to refer to the novel coronavirus on Monday night, despite calls from global health officials to avoid labels associating the disease with a particular nation or ethnic group"

Are we going to rename MERS?

The Corona virus originated in China, and MERS developed in the Middle East. (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). We'd have called it SARS-2 but that's confusing.

This business of accusing Trump of racism for using the term "Chinese virus" originated in China. It's amazing what money can do to control media.

Until not so long ago most Western media outlets referred to the virus as the Chinese Corona Virus or the Wuhan Virus. They stopped when China threatened to expel journalists from Western media from China.

So many rich Westerners now have huge investments in China they're controlling events in the West. Why else do you think the UK government wants to use Huawei?

No we're not going to rename the MERS-CoV to the 'Jordon virus' for the same reason we shouldn't call SARS-CoV-2 the 'Chinese virus'.

MERS is the disease caused by the MERS-CoV virus
Covid-19 is the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus

It's not just Trump though. How many of our media oulets resort to pictures of Chinese people in masks to accompany stories about the outbreak?

MERS actually originated in Saudi Arabia, though there have been cases in Jordan and elsewhere in the Middle East - and in many other places too. The ME stands for Middle East - as you're no doubt aware. Are you suggesting that Middle Easterners are less like to be offended than Jordanians? Like saying "Europeans are f'ing idiots" is ok, but "the French are f'ing idiots" isn't?

The WHO started saying we shouldn't name diseases after places in 2015. They also decided at the same (perhaps not to be hypocritical) not to call diseases after the physicians that discovered them, like Hodgkins Lymphoma and German Measles for example.

The WHO is not a "woke" organisation that suddenly realised they were being cruel to inhabitants of the Ebola River Valley. The decision came under the leadership of Margaret Chan, elected with the strong backing of the Chinese Peoples Party. Needless to say, Taiwan wasn't welcome at the WHO under her leadership.

Up until the Peoples Party made a song and dance about calling it the "Chinese Corona Virus" or the "Wuhan Virus" (though I believe Chinese media uses this latter term), many media outlets saw no problem in using those terms. It's not as though any offence is intended - it is purely descriptive.

The CPP buggered up the handling of the virus, effectively allowing the virus to spread around the world without saying anything until it was too late to stop. At the same time suppressing journalists and doctors trying to get the word out. So they have a public relations nightmare and have been pressuring Western media not to use the terms or they will use their not inconsiderable economic power. And in the end they chucked out the journalists anyway.

In the meantime they're spreading propaganda all over China that accuses the US of planting the virus in Wuhan during a recent visit by the US military. Keeping 1.5 billion angry Chinese happy is a major concern - especially when your economy is in the toilet.

The media having kicked off this crazy (and somewhat hypocritical) racism accusation, Trump has grabbed it with both hands. He knows a winner when he sees one. When Trump uses the term "Chinese Virus" he's doing it both to **** off the People's Party; because it's the exact opposite of what they were trying to achieve, and the media who succumbed to Chinese pressure and who are busy calling him racist when 6 weeks ago they were using the same or similar terms. And of course every time they call him racist, they reinforce the term "Chinese Virus" - as the opening poster did rather successfully - which will no doubt help once it's all over to re-engineer the US economy to be less dependent on China.

I don't personally use that term, and I certainly wouldn't start a post like that, but I really don't think it's racist - even if he is using it for propaganda purposes.

But if you're right I suppose I'll have to start calling Swiss Roll "Roulade" and Turkish Delight "Lokum" because these terms are clearly offensive. And at least we know the Peoples Party will be happy. Don't want to **** them off. Not when they supply most of our antibiotics, respiratory masks and personal protective clothing.

Also the Spanish Flu of 1918 was actually first diagnosed in Kansas, good ol' U S of A.

I don't think it is racist at all, it has nothing to do with race, it's to do with where it came from.

You wouldn't call 'Chinese food' or 'Chinese pollution' racist would you?

I've been calling it the 'Wuhan virus' ever since the whole thing started. It wasn't until the Chinese Communist Party went crying to the WHO they decided to change the name, go and Google 'Wuhan Virus' or 'China/Chinese virus/coronavirus' and search for results between December to February. Every media outlet The Economist, CNN, WSJ, The Guardian even the Global Times which is a mouthpiece of the CCP called it the Wuhan Virus. This wouldn't even be an issue if the WHO wasn't in China's pocket.

This is exactly what China wanted to achieve, to get people fighting amongst themselves over racism and the origins of the virus in the first place. A senior Chinese minister has been kicking off on Twitter (banned in China lol) towards Indonesia, Netherlands, Singapore and even Russia for using these terms.

Do I think Trump is doing it deliberately to get a kick out of China? Yes.
Do I think people are acting like snowflakes over it? Certainly.

China is doing its utmost to smear America and its military, the WHO haven't covered themselves in glory neither, just look at the list of names of diseases/viruses on their website named after geographical locations.

Would you be that offended if a new deadly fever came out of the UK and was called 'British fever'? Grow a pair some of you.

MERS actually originated in Saudi Arabia

It didn't. It was first identified in June 2012 in Saudi Arabia, but they then traced back cases in Jordon in April 2012.

I'm saying they have names. Don't rename them because some people want to make some political / rascist / nationalist etc. point.

Trump knows exactly what he is doing. There is an election coming up, the opposition party is in disarray and America is looking for somebody to blame. It's not Americas fault it's clearly China's fault. Does anyone think Trump will be bothered about being called racist, he will most likely love it.
