Checking up on one of our old favourites, Daniel Ayala.

The following season where we spaffed big money on Rhodes, Nugent and Downing
Rhodes and Downing were ‘gifts’ from the chairman weren’t they?
Well between Orta and Gibbo they got it done. Karanka made it pretty clear it was nothing to do with him

Rhodes scored 6 goals in 18 that season.
Downing played in 45/46 league matches.
Nugent finished the season as our top league goalscorer.

Surprised to see anyone referring to it as spaffed money. We went up on goal difference. These three players were crucial.

We spent a lot.. in a promotion season

They were vital goals. But very expensive goals. We didn't get value for money out of Rhodes.

Downing, is debatable. He was OK in his second spell with Boro. Played lots of matches. No.do7bt helped us get promoted. Split opinion. I thought he was OK. But a large transfer fee and no doubts massive wages.

Nugent scored 8 goals in 42 matches for Boro. Again. Hard to say he was great value for money.

I see what your saying and they helped us get promoted so in that sense it was money well spent but individually it's hard to make a case that any of those players were good value. The good value signing were made primarily before Orta. Some by Mowbray and some by Karanka.

Clayton, Nsue, Forshaw, Bamford (loan), Like were all good value signings made by Karanka. And there's very few duds there.

The recruitment issues got worse when got promoted though. Again under Orta

He was fantastic for us.

I remember him going down with a nasty cut to the head and they were checking him for concussion. Eventually gets back on the pitch bloodied and bandaged, ball comes up from a goal kick and he’s the first to meet it with a thundering header.

He’d have stuck his head in the way of a cannonball.

Rotherham fans won't miss him, two very suspicious red cards for second yellows in a row.

The last one was a 100% intentional and unjustifiable handball from him, in his last appearance of them.

A shame his career is ending this way, he was immense for us.
