Channel 5 News - special on deprivation in Middlesbrough

I caught a bit of Channel 5 News today about deprivation in Middlesbrough (about 5.25pm). They are doing a series of special 5 minute reports this week on how people are managing to live in Middlesbrough in the current economic climate. Today it followed the White Feather Project an aorganisation that helps keep people alive by distributing food and some care. I can see them driving a van through Brambles Farm and a 1970s estate. They were giving out bags of food at very low prices. They interviewed a middle aged guy who was recovering from an operation and so could not work. He received £251 a month to live on in benefits (£8.36 a day). He said he was eating only one meal a day and had lost 1.5 stones in weight recently. He could only afford to have heating on for 3 hours a day. It said many getting help were working full time.

Tommorow is about cost of living.

Well done to the White Feather Project - they will be keeping some people alive this winter.

The White Feather Project have a shop on Kings Road North Ormesby. They stock up on all the essentials (not just food, put pet food, sanitary and cleaning products etc) and now they have freezers also, offering frozen food because many of the pensioners find it is too far for them to walk to Berwick Hills Morrisons or the B & M near the Riverside. You can fill up a bag of food with a fiver round the shop.
I helped a film maker Lucy who has been travelling from London to interview those on the White Feather Project and go out with them on their rounds in the van.
Click on the Middlesbrough Food Bank website and it indicates that 40% of children in Middlesbrough are officially in poverty. This is really serious times. Operations like White Feather are helping people survive.

There is going to be a food bank collection before the next Boro game v Luton Town on 10th December.

Interesting demand on their website, for Rishi Sunak to join them for the day. What about Matt Hancock too, he's obviously got plenty of time on his hands?

and yet the people of grove hill etc voted for the posh tw.at.
Funny how the tories can convince those that will suffer most from their austere policies to keep voting for them because they promise to cut immigration.
i could cry, sometimes.
I remember the Leader of the Darlo Tories celebrating a milestone of 1 million food parcels given out by local food banks. Breathtaking in its hypocrisy. And still they vote Tory.

Mind, looking at him he ate most of them himself.

In general, these types of enterprise are struggling to get enough food to meet demand. They rely on an inefficient supply chain for retailers and producers, and, for obvious reasons, they are getting more efficient and have less surplus stock. The problem is only going to get worse.
They are also struggling for volunteers so - if you have a bit of free time, give them a bell.

The MP for most of Middlesbrough is Labour.

Simon Clarke's chances are probably only 50/50 at the next election - East Cleveland and S/E Middlesbrough is normally a marginal Labour seat.

'Thank humanity' 'Humanity' has got us where we are today

Thank F we have decent people in the world to help those less fortunate than ourselves. But there's very much an easier answer to the current ills, it comes from the top of society, people who could 'trickle down' properly if they chose to.
But they won't

I remember when many welfare benefits were frozen in 2015 and no one batted an eye lid, but I knew there would be consequences. Family tax credits were actually cut and bedroom tax introduced. Nowadays there not a lot of protests, because those affected have no influence and little voice or just completely brow beaten (from cradle to grave). There is no George Orwell writing The Road to Wigan Pier, we are told that the film "I Daniel Blake" is Ken Loach fantasy. Some posters on here say people are just as well off on benefit as those working and those that are working and struggling are just wasteful. Even when exact figures are presented. I don't think people believed me when I see what I had seen at Government Assessment Centre e.g security guards siting outside WCs that had doors that could not be locked to prevent suicides. Then Channel 4 demonising the poor through programmes like Benefits Street.

And now more than ever hard working families both working descending into a pit of never ending debt and poverty.

Simply unable to make ends meet and losing that last crumb of comfort, hope.

I never thought I'd see in my lifetime young families and the old surviving on foodbanks and making a choice between eating or keeping warm.

And the majority just accept it because it doesn't affect them.

Heartbreaking the society we've turned in to.
