Changing Kick off Times to Appease The Pub Viewers

Football fans can’t attend matches outdoors, even in small numbers. But Premier League evening kick off times will change from 8.15pm to 8pm to ensure games finish by 10pm to allow viewers to watch in pubs. This policy is like looking at a magic eye picture.

The worst bit about this KO time change for me is that they seemed to have no issues shoving numerous weeknight kick offs back 15 minutes to appease the TV audience, but it was always deemed impossible to do the same for away fans trying to catch the last train back.

Too right. Completely agree. And no more than a group of 6 in pubs? Ridiculous to think that will happen.

When did they change to 8:15, it always used to be 8pm kick off on an evening

That match is on a Monday night.
It was always for the TV audience, even when the fans were actually allowed to attend.

I'm glad they've moved the kick off time.

I don’t care what time the kick off is frankly but the OP is spot on that they have moved the kick off time for pubs (encouraging people to crowd indoors) when they never thought about the travelling inconvenience of away football supporters in the past.

I think it'll have been done by Sky to avoid any negative publicity from pubs staying open beyond 10pm to show their matches, rather than Sky having the interests of pubs in mind.

Same outcome, different motive.

By the way it is not just the Monday night game - the Fulham v Aston Villa game is now at 5:45 as a result. Times have also been shifted forward 15 mins on Saturday evening too.

Isn't it irresponsible for pubs to be showing live football at all, if it isn't safe to allow a limited number of fans into their grounds?

I didn't think pubs were able to show sport under the same umbrella as no music or live entertainment to reduce people singing out loud or shouting and potentially spreading??

My local is certainly not showing any sport

No - pubs can indeed show live sport and do so with traffic heavy. The Government’s website states: "All venues should ensure that steps are taken to avoid people needing to unduly raise their voices to each other. ‘This includes, but is not limited to, refraining from playing music or broadcasts that may encourage shouting, including if played at a volume that makes normal conversation difficult. Ha.

I think it makes sense. Pubs are allowed to open. Like it or not the economy does need to try to still function a bit. Most pubs (and indeed people in the pubs) will probably be trying to follow table service/distancing/mask guidelines. If they have to shut at 10pm, it doesn't seem unreasonable to coordinate the kick off times, given that Sky make a stack from their pub subscriptions.

Would never normally want to agree with Rick Parry for obvious reasons, but....

Could also be that the pubs would ask Sky for a discount on their extortionate subscription rates if they weren't able to show the whole match for their punters.

If you can't see the whole game some might be put off from bothering to go down the boozer at all and pubs would have probably lobbied Sky about this. This shift stops the pubs trying to get a discount so Sky are still quids in.
