Cattersty Sands

I have a seen a few National reviews putting this beach in the top 50 in the country and saying it is a hidden gem and Ms Wurzel who is not from the area asked me about it and I said for the first time ever about Cleveland attractions I had never heard of it. Its location being put as North Yorkshire. To be honest I thought it must near Scarborough. Then reading trip advisor with people saying it is Skinningrove beach and described as the best kept secret beach in the UK. Maybe Redcar and Cleveland council could do more to promote it and keep surroundings cleaner as some said there was a problem with dog poo, but the beach was spectacular and empty.

Anyone been recently? what do you think?

Cheers for the photos - Plenty of nice looking sand and not many visitors on what looks like a hot day. You could do 10m social distancing.

Zoo's photo is very good but doesn't give a lot away.

Photos were taken at the most scenic. When the tide is in there are just rocks. The row of cottages is missed out to the right of the second photo which I find a bit unsightly. Yes popular dog walking stretch of coastland. When the sun is out as good as any beach you wish to see. Last went when doing a section of the Cleveland Way down to Boulby ( highly recommended)

Townies please stay away, this beach has been one of the best kept secrets by us Woolybacks.
In all seriousness though, its a beautiful beach and word is getting out. I was there when we had that mid-week hot spell about 5 weeks back and it was very busy, folks having barbeques, even a couple of paddle boarders out on the water. Skinningrove itself is a strange place, makes Royston Vasey look cosmopolitan and parking is limited. Spent many a summer day there swimming in the sea with my Grandad so it brings back lovey memories for me when I go down there.

It's great, saw somebody post a picture of it on twitter but they refused to reveal its whereabouts. People started posting pictures of competing locations, a beach near Stornoway and somewhere in the Bahamas. I had to smile, if only they'd known that the cliffs are made from blast furnace slag, there's a rolling mill on the cliff top and the hinterland is made up of Victorian era terraces that once housed steelworkers and miners.:)

I have been to the Tom Leonard Museum a couple of times. but never realised there was a large beach in Skinningrove.

I spent a lot of time in the summers of my teenage years on that beach....lovely place!

Much earlier than the steel works the cliffs on the other side of Skinningrove used to have Pi$$ by the barrel load delivered for the production of Alum, used for dying cloth. The phrase 'taking the p1$$' is believed to have originated from the need for Urine which was collected in buckets left on street corners for people to fill. Also the first public toilets built in Hull were for the collection of urine to ship further North to the mines.
