Transfers are often seen as black/white success/fail, but a lot depends on the team/manager at the time... how we're playing, what style we're playing etc...

Look at Dijksteel and Bola - both signed as highly rated, we were all happy with the signings. They were terrible, no confidence, Bola farmed out on loan Dijksteel nowhere near the team etc... But also, so were the team. Change of manager, change of style, change of fortunes - they've been a mainstay of the team ever since, and I'm not saying that they're our best players or undroppable but no-one can deny they haven't more than played their part over the last 2 years and will need a decent replacement if/when they leave. I'm also pretty sure they will be remembered fondly when that time comes.

I dare say the same will be true of McGree/Lenihan/Forss/etc... if and when we get a team that is functioning and firing - that part is up to the manager. I didn't see many people complaining about these signings when we made them.

The biggest transfer blunder we have made recently is not replacing Tav, that is what has cost us

Because as manager he was undoubtedly taking an average Champo squad into league 1. He tried to implement a style of play that the squad at his disposal was obviously incapable of playing, and then just stuck with it as the team looked increasingly lost and confused. I saw no evidence of him knowing what he was doing, he appeared to be completely out of his depth. (I have every sympathy for him there, it was painful to watch and Gibson should never have given him the job). But this isn't the guy I'd choose to have standing next to Carrick influencing him in games.

He was very good, though not perhaps as good as you suggest. But so what? Alex Ferguson was a run of the mill player. Our most successful ever manager never played at the top levels. Mourinho never played at all.

I do hope he can impart some pearls of wisdom to the lads playing in his position, but he certainly didn't manage to improve the defence last time, or we wouldn't have been getting embarrassingly rinsed 0-3 in half an hour at home to Swansea. Good players went backwards rapidly under him last time.

It's naive to think that Carrick will unilaterally make all the decisions, (not least because he's already told us in his prezzer that that won't be the case - 'club man' 'all working together' etc), but also because that just isn't how it works in football.
Yes Carrick will make the calls, but Woodgate will give his opinion and he will have an influence. Carrick obviously sees Woodgate as someone who will know the Champo well, (indeed better than he does), since he has no experience himself at Champo level. That's useful to some degree, but if Woodgate still thinks we can play champagne top 6 Prem football (and that's what Carrick knows of course) then we might be in trouble. Again.

We're in a relegation battle, with a powderpuff squad that lacks leadership and fight. We need someone in the coaching team who knows how to grind out results.

Alex Ferguson, Klopp, Mourinho, there’s loads as you rightly say weren’t great players and have made great managers. And plenty of great players who couldn’t hack being a number 1.
But he’s first team coach. There’s a world of difference between that and a manager/head coach.
So to have concerns because of his managerial record is comparing apples with oranges. He obviously knows the game, and the club. New managers regularly bring in someone who knows the club as Karanka did.
In my opinion it’s unnecessarily negative to criticise Woodgate appointment when his stature in the game is exactly what you’d want on your staff, and he’ll be a better coach for his managerial experience. Massive positive for me but as usual, our fan base prefers negativity because they want better. Like who?

I don't think Woody has nothing to offer, of course he does. He played at Real Madrid for a reason, and he's a Boro fan. I'd have him working with the academy set up all day long. But we are 4th bottom right now bringing in a manager with no experience who has played all his football at the top end of the Prem. This ain't the Prem. Carrick will need to get a tune out of them more or less immediately, and let's be honest, who trusts the club to deliver the new Boateng and Tavernier the squad desperately needs in January?

You're right that Woody will have progressed a bit, but he's still inexperienced.

I'm excited about Carrick, but the lack of experience and nous at Champo level is a concern to me because we've been here before, and we got bitten.

Can you point me to where I've said that appointing Woodgate is the "exactly like bringing in Ferguson or Mourinho" ?

My point is that there's a large portion of our fans who are self entitled, miserable, know-it-alls, who are only too happy to invent scenarios in their heads in order to justify their anger and allow them to rant across social media.

I think we’re all hoping his assistant is in his 50’s with plenty of experience. I think if that happens, the Woodgate and Carrick appointments will be more universally welcomed

Maybe he is a really good coach, but there's no more proof of that than there is proof that he's not.

There's absolutely no available proof that it's an "absolute master stroke" to appoint somebody who ultimately participated in failure at 3 coaching jobs he's been involved in.

He assisted Tony Pulis to 7th.. and was pushing for the likes of Spence to get game time.
With a stripped down squad he managed Boro better than Chris Wilder did this year!
Picked up to assist Jason Tindall, preferred to manage by the board racked up 1.78ppg

Your opinion goes against what many folks involved in football think.

Try this....what can you bring to mfc that othe rmanagers couldn't or have tried and failed with ...how do you see this club progressing and how quickly do ypu think ylu can turn the corner with mfc

He`s no fool when dealing with pushy "journalists" - hes just bats them away with a smile - "you want me to tell you my secrets".
One "journalist" sounded like he wanted to answer his own question and persisted - but, cool as a cucumber - Carrick spoke calmly about balance and winning games.
No clever in-jokes, playing to the gallery or insulting the audience.
This guy has played all over the world on the big stage, for his Country and his Club(s).
The local reporter from The Drovers Arms Argus is small fry for Michael Carrick.
I`ve got a title for his place in the Match-Day thread already ;@)) (y)
