Carrick's "Managing your emotions" comment

Interesting that Carrick said in his post-match interview that it's about everybody inside of the stadium managing their emotions during the game.

I couldn't help but wonder whether he was referring to the fans who were becoming frustrated at times, especially towards the end of the game when we were still trying to play it out from the back and I think the fans were calling for a bit more urgency from the team.

I think it was one of those nights where he's probably thought to himself that the most important thing was not losing the game.

The game produced high emotions. I was certainly on the edge of my sofa, shouting at the tv for some of it, and at in silence, willing us on for the majority of the second half.

It will have been aimed at the fans but it was a frustrating second half. I believe he brought on Barlaser to get some control in the game but we got even worse and the fans became more frustrated and edgy which is understandable. It was a big game for us. In the end we take the point and move on. Hopefully back to our best on Saturday

Lenihan said something along the same lines in his post match interview on BBC Tees. It was a frustrating game, and affair play to Stoke they got their tactics right tonight. At least we didn’t get beat, and there’s still a lot to play for. I didn‘t think our subs were quite right tonight. I’d have left Archer on and taken Ramsey off for Forss. I’d have kept Howson on too. Guess we don’t know the reasons behind them like tiredness, niggles etc, but we really missed not being able to bring Crooks on. It was perfect for him. Oh well, it’s going to be a great end to the season, hopefully.

Also, how cold was it? I haven’t been that cold since the Blackpool drubbing under Strachan!

Lots of frustration from the aimed at the officials tonight which might not translate well to tha players or the bench if they think it’s aimed towards them. Carrick probably hasn’t heard our fans being frustrated before and he definitely hasn’t faced a team that got down and dirty to stick it up us.

I think tonight while a decent result was probably the time to bring out the old Southgate adage “we learned a lot tonight’ - we looked leggy and we didn’t have that ‘game management’ that doesn’t seem to be part of Carrick’s game right now (maybe we’ve seen the first chink in the armour) I’m glad we saw that tonight rather than seeing it for the first time in the playoffs.

Chuba Akpom was well up for the 1000th goal, but maybe he was was over stimulated, overly pumped up.. deservedly so given the journey he has been on.

Tonight was a tough challenge and we came out the other end. Zach Steffen showed his class yet again and was extremely composed throughout.

Aaron Ramsey’s performance will hopefully dull those £25m transfer whispers and perhaps put to rest the villa fans talk of him being the next Jack Grealish.. of course I want us to sign him in the summer.

Dan Barlaser looked well off the pace and not like a player I could see making the step up to the premier league.

21 games in, still going strong, a must needed reality check especially with the twitterati predicting a 4-0 victory.

No hot chocolate in the concourse at half time.. blew my mind. Jeez man! This 10% ticket increase is looking more and more unjustified with every basic commercial blunder I come across.

Conclusion: Trust the fans, harden the fcuk up and get Gibbo a card for Makro.

I think it was aimed at everyone, players and fans. There were times where the players were trying too hard to get things going and they looked a bit frantic on a few occasions, almost desperate in a few passages of play. Carrick made a few 'calm down' gestures from the touchline to the team in the second half.

Then the crowd also transmitted their frustration at times when the team were trying to follow Carrick's instructions and slow it down. I think he wanted us to just enjoy a bit of possession and take the sting out of the game a bit, but it got to sections of the crowd.

So I think Carrick was making the point to everyone about managing their enotions and who better to make the point than a man who has his own emotions moving exactly as he wants at all times like a puppet on a string. Zen like calmness and knowing what the next step should be. I imagine he'd be unflappable even in a crisis, **** Bruce Willis you'd want Michael Carrick on the inside planning a way forward if you were trapped by terrorists in Nakatomi Plaza.

I noticed Carrick telling them to calm down a few times and maybe the frustrations from the stands was transmitting to the players and we got a bit lost. As you say, we, and more importantly Carrick, will have learned a lot tonight.

I'll admit, there was a moment late on in the game when I think Steffen either had the ball at his feet and took ages to release it, or had a chance to throw it out and hesitated. Either way I could understand the crowd getting on his back at the time.

One other point I meant to make is I've never quite experienced such a weird end to a match before.

The final whistle went and there was almost silence with no one really knowing how to react. No boos, shouts of frustration, no cheers or claps, just people kind of stood about unsure of exactly how to react. Even the PA guy turned the music right down, it was a weird experience.

For me a good point though. If you don't play well (which we didn't, especially second half), don't lose it, and we dug in and won the point. Like Steffens save at the end it could be crucial come the day of reckoning.

That’s how I felt too when it finished. Wasn’t upset, wasn’t happy, wasn’t really relieved. Think I was more surprised than anything at how it unfolded and then eventually I just started to clap the team off.

Now I’ve got home I’m just pleased we have managed to take a point out of it and move on.
