Career change? Career advice?

I left my job in education (in academia and schools) after 30 years. Been pottering about for 6 months and enjoying it, doing stuff at my leisure but need a job, although at my age (59) I guess I'm restricted, or perhaps just a little bit fussy. I have a PhD (in education) but really don't want to work for an institution. My Mrs says I need to get a job, but I haven't a clue. I'm quite patient and good at communicating.
Any ideas? Anyone changed their jobs late on?

At 59 you don't really have much chance of changing career away from education. But instead of teaching how about doing consulting work with local authorities on how to run schools more efficiently?

Or training teachers to be more engaging?

Or teach business people to be more innovative, creative or effective?

you're right. I'm in the mould of educating, can't change my that now, too old.
You are also right about trying to inspire other educators. I have written a book on it. It's difficult to change attitudes.

A girl I know went from teaching ( headteacher) to now visiting and doing reports for these small children’s homes that seem to be springing up everywhere. I think it’s her teaching skills that help build a rapport with the youngsters enabling her to get a true picture of how these places are being run.

thanks, I'll look into that.

I know a bloke who went from teaching English to working in linguistics in AI for Apple. Big bucks

I did something similar at 55 gave up a long term career, took a few months out, then decided that I wanted to do something different before I retired. So moved from Wiltshire to North Devon to set up a new franchise.

I will admit that it was an absolute nightmare, we started just before lockdown and never got going before running out of funds. The stress killed my mental health, and it was a huge awakening about the different skill set that you need to do this type of business. I realised that I was just not fit enough to do a more manual type of job. I was so pleased that I managed to get out of it eventually and was able to get back to live close to my kids again.

If I did something like this again, I would break down my skill set so that I could consider using my existing skills in a new environment. What subjects did you teach ? What skill sets do you bring as a teacher ? How many hours do you want to work ? Could just cutting your hours give you what you need.

If you are based in Bristol, I am quite close to you in Wiltshire, how to have a chat over a drink.

Look at trading futures (like gold/usd and indices) , you would need patience and not in a hurry to make a wage immediately. Take a look at baby pips website it’s free and will give you an in sight if it’s your cup a tea .
You would ever need to work for anyone ever again

I hear the Government are looking for a new leader. The current candidates look pretty rubbish, so you stand a good chance.

Teesside Uni are looking for people to work on their apprenticeship team. Compliance and assessment .

What about exam marking? My missus has left her full time job in education and now works from home marking GCSE for most of the exam boards all over the world.

I thought about getting my HGV license and working for an agency. It would be something completely different to what I do now and would see me through for the last few years of my working life. Still not sure but i did my theory test and I think the training course lasts for 7 days.

You might get some ideas here.
