Car insurance

Post Office Money insurance. Renewal last year was £234 for me and my wife on a 2010 5 Series BMW. That included European breakdown cover and lost key replacement cover. Thats fully comprehensive with protected no claims. The cheapest I have ever had insurance. The norm had been around 500 quid for years.

EDIT to add: When I did my renewal, Martin Lewis has this tool where you put your job title in, and then it suggests alternatives that are similar but carry lower risk. I changed mine from Technology Architect to Technology Writer and saved another £50.

If you don't mind my asking, how much does your *household* pay for car insurance in total (for all cars in total)? Feel free to round to the nearest £50.
We pay £500 ish for 2x cars. One small car and one diesel estate. It's always been a little less than that in the past, around £450. 15 years no claims, nothing else to declare etc. Currently wit AA, was with Aviva prior to that

I drive a 3 year old BMW 1 Series and insurance is £212.

The wife drives a 2 year old Fiat 500 and insurance is £201

We are both insured to drive both vehicles.

Son has a 4 year old BMW 1 Series, he is 23 and has been driving since he was 17 so has 5 years no claims, his last insurance was just short of £600- both me and his mum are also insured to drive his car.

So whole family is just about £1k for the 3 cars.

I've just past my test, for a £6000 Vw scirocco I've been quoted £3460 and for a £17900 Mercedes e-class it was £4100.
Crazy, but I guess its all based on the statistical liklihood of a claim on each car?

I'm paying around £300 on a Porsche Spyder, a lot less than an Audi A5 I had a few year ago that was half the price.

Wife and I each have our own policies for our cars, so 2 cars in total, both paying around £300 a year, so £600 in total.

I've been with LVIC for 4 years now - they are really competitive with their renewals - very happy with them.

IF - drivers are supposed to tell their insurer straight away when they get points. I only realised on renewal. It put about £30 a year on my insurnace for the next 5 years. It was more costly than the fine.

Mine, LVIC, knew straight away and just added it to my policy. DVLA must have a link with them or something.

Mrs used to drive a bmw 3 series brand new and paid £450 a year. This came down to £350 a year when she put me as a named driver

I was paying £300 a year for my 08 focus

During Covid we got rid of the bmw as I've been working from home for 5 years and hardly drive so it's a slight i convenience but not the end of the world. Saved us a fortune in bmw servicing, her monthly car payments etc and I've been a named driver on her insurance for a few years - she drives as part of her NHS job so needs business cover and for the two of us it's currently £250 a year and that's with her having a £6k claim on a hired motorhome

Would love a jazzy new car, but we are both child free and addicted to spending very little on cars now 💸💸💸

Budget about £500 a year for repairs and servicing and it's ticking over

Yeah, given all these factors and all posts (thanks by the way) I could sort of understand if we were paying £500ish. But we are a fair bit of above that and I just cannot understand why, I’ve tried every “trick” in the book to get it lower but it just won’t budge. Oh well, it’s a mystery.

I tried everything too mate. Loads of different providers, tweaking where things such as where the car is parked daily/overnight etc. All quotes so much higher than last year. Rang a few and they all mentioned some government insurance tax that has gone up quite a bit which was a contributing factor!

Fair enough, though in truth ours has never ever been below £700, even with no claims in last 5 years. I do comparison/tweaks every single year, there was a time I accepted it being a bit higher as she had a bit of a crash a few years ago and had to settle 50:50, but it was longer than 5 years ago.

No claims seems a bit of a con for me. I looked at it for my wife last year, and I was paying £470 a year for her policy to maintain her no claims. When I priced the policy with her having 0 no claims, the policy was £70 more per year. Made no sense to be maintaining it so we cancelled her policy and she's a named driver on mine now.

Mines paid for and sorted by work but the Mrs is paying about £55 a month including breakdown.

Mines about £800 a year including breakdown cover. I had a mobility car for about 6 years so didn't build up any no claims this is my second year with this car. The funny thing is I ended up with a black box in my first year to the great amusement of my Mrs and my in-laws, I've only been driving 20 years! Even though my car is A 2004 XC90 2.4d and an old banger I still pay 'luxury car premium' on it, far from luxury it's sat on my drive at the minute as it has a powersteering leak on rather the high pressure line or the pump(possibly both)and trying to decide whether it is worth getting fixed or scrapping it.

I've had another butcher's at this including making up some stuff about never being in an accident etc, purely for quotation purposes.

I think one of the conclusions I've drawn is we have always included breakdown cover, legal cover and a few extras. We also have a hybrid, which from what I'm told can increase insurance premiums because of the battery risks. So I think I could maybe get this below £500 if there were a few things taken off and/or the car was different.

I'm just keen to understand what is pushing it up, so maybe I now have the answer. Thanks for all replies.
