This sort of game and performance is precisely why I’ve been more optimistic about the season than a large number of other posters. Wigan were very, very poor but they’re representative of a large chunk of teams in the division IMO.
Three or four wins on the bounce for Boro and we saunter into the top half and look up rather than down going into November, the World Cup break, Christmas fixtures and the January window.
The performance we put in last night has been lurking for ages, or was until maybe Cardiff at home. The sense we’d pump somebody 4 or 5-1. There is talent in this team. It needs strengthening in midfield, if we do that in January then it can still be a positive season for the club. The new manager has some talent to work with.
We’re a little short in places but so is every other team in the division, including those who’ve come down with parachute payments. Watford are four points above us but we we really should’ve won at Vicarage Road IMO. Or drawn at the very least. So for all the talent in their squad, we’re not really that far off them. Think of the stupid points we dropped earlier on as well, at Stoke in particular.
Teams may look crap for 3, 4, 5 games but it only takes a decent win to turn it around and set you on your way. Which is why a sense of perspective is so important in the Championship.
They key for Boro and whoever is taking over is putting consistent form together. Fry, Dijksteel, Giles, Crooks, Akpom(his attitude and general performances are so refreshing from where they were), Jones… there’s some good quality there, IF they apply themselves consistently. It’s no good not beating Huddersfield now.
You can’t beat a resounding midweek away win under the lights. You see how a bit of aggression and attacking intent can change the mood. Long may it continue.
