Can the old dog learn new tricks? The Curious case of Neil Warnock and Middlesbrough

I don’t know if this article has been posted on here before but a superb piece of analysis on how Warnock one dimensional approach is both outdated and completely wrong for the players we have, another tactically aware manager could do infinitely better, the analysis is evidence based as well, I can imagine Scott is banging his head off the table watching this debacle unfold, hopefully he can convince Gibbo it is time to act…..

I think it's a load of rubbish personally. Does the more tactically aware manager sprinkle magic pixie dust onto Dijksteel and Bola when they're injured? A lot of talk is going around about how Payero is the answer to all our problems, that article/blog mentions that he should be played to fix our midfield issue.. but obviously doesn't realise that the game where he highlights our issues is one where Payero started and played!

Who do we put out against Peterborough? The choice is limited by the sounds of it. If the reports are true

DF Darnell Fisher - INJURED
DF Anfernee Dijksteel- INJURED
DF Grant Hall - INJURED
DF Dael Fry - INJURED
DF Lee Peltier - SUSPENDED
MF Martín Payero - INJURED
FW Sammy Ameobi - INJURED
FW Marcus Browne - INJURED

The defence pretty much picks itself, I think it will be another game where fans will question the decision to send Djed Spence out on loan. Then the question is do we go 3-4-3 or a variation of 3-5-2?
Peterborough tend to go with five in midfield so I would be tempted to follow suit. Switch Hernandez out on to the right, to bring Jones back in on the left, and bring Tavernier inside on the left.

We seem to be lacking fitness in the 2nd half, so I would hold onto Watmore until then.. plus talk and whispers of Ikpeazu coming back into the fold and Sporar and Watmore not being fit together atm. Matt Crooks driving down the middle with Howson giving protection/cover to Hernandez and Tavernier doing the same on the left.

GK Joe Lumley

DF Paddy McNair
DF Sol Bamba
DF Marc Bola

MF Onel Hernández
MF Jonny Howson
MF Matt Crooks
MF Marcus Tavernier
MF Isaiah Jones

FW Andraž Šporar
FW Uche Ikpeazu

Four substitutes.. just to prove a point maybe?

GK Luke Daniels
MF James Léa Siliki
FW Toyosi Olusanya
FW Duncan Watmore

He's good at proving one point. He's not up to the job anymore. Thanks for keeping us up with a decent performance every other game, bur retire gracefully.

Yeah, dunno about this, not sure those screenshots are the genius bits of tactical analysis the author thinks they are.

Preferred that Twitter thread from the other day, agreed with every word of that.

I think the title of the article perfectly sums up the problem, Warnock is struggling to adjust to the modern game, the guy isn’t referring to the Peterborough game, I think we all know the players who will be missing, more so he is speaking generally on passed performances and formations and allowing players to play to their strengths.

I forgot Payero had a knee injury.. four substitutes?

If Warnock signed off on Spence and Coulson going out on loan without bringing in cover (by that I mean a central defender and a fullback) then fair enough.

We're in a results based game and as I've said many times before, October this year is critical and I firmly believe that the next two games could decide Warnock's fate.

isn't it strange when a club isn't playing well there seems to be a lot of players on the injured list. not saying all of these lads are faking it but i would guess at a few

"Watching Middlesbrough today to mainly help @danamalt out. So just going to do a little thread on what I’ve seen/think as to why Boro look pretty abject. The short answer is Neil Warnock, the long answer I’m about to give"

"Boro concede cheap goals because they’re not coached the right way, and Boro don’t create more chances because they’re not coached the right way"

It's all Neil Warnock's fault.. explained and evidenced* above

"He consistently hides from the ball and creates awkward angles, meaning the player has to turn back."

It's all Jonny Howson's fault.. explained and evidenced* above

"Marcus Tavernier is your best player, play him in his best position. Isiaiah Jones is better than Onel Hernandez - play him. James Lea Siliki is a ball carrying 8, play him there"

Play Marcus Tavernier in his best position and play Isiaiah Jones instead of Onel Hernandez and play James Lea Siliki

"Martin Payero has played South American football, a country that is far more aggressive and just as, if not faster than Championship football - he doesn’t need bedding in or adapting"

Play Martin Payero, Argentina is more aggressive and faster than the championship.. he doesn't need bedding in.

"Ryan Lowe is the obvious candidate but knowing Kieran Scott - a German coach like Florian Kohfeldt would be more realistic"

It's obvious who the Middlesbrough manager should be.. but it won't be him.

*evidenced according to oneboro meaning it's been posted on twitter.

DF Darnell Fisher - INJURED - knee bent the wrong way apparently
DF Anfernee Dijksteel- INJURED - definitely injured.
DF Grant Hall - INJURED - did his groin.. he might be back?
DF Dael Fry - INJURED - pulled his stomach or groin at Hull. might be back, might be out
DF Lee Peltier - SUSPENDED - definitely suspended
MF Martín Payero - INJURED - hurt his knee a few weeks ago.. might be back?
FW Sammy Ameobi - INJURED - he was done in early doors
FW Marcus Browne - INJURED - definitely injured.. on his way back tho

Without getting above ourselves,at this stage of the season I would ask:

What is wrong about Boro, that fans are worried that they could likely get beaten by Peterborough and Barnsley?
Why is it that we fear we are more likely to be fighting against relegation rather than being in the top 6 at the end of this season?
If so many players are getting injured in training (?) - who is the physio and who is doing the coaching? Do they know what they are doing?
We cant string two wins together - and its not about "rub of the green" or "luck" or "bad refs".
Its embarrassing seeing teams like Forest - who were on their arz - pick up points and take off with a new Manager.
We get beat off teams with the worse records for scoring and wins.
We are bluddy awful and its time we made the right decision.
We can look at the table and then look at the form of teams like Derby and Forest.

so 3 dodgy ones then :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Just a quick reminder of us not creating chances.. Warnock/Howson are the devil etc etc Tav left his man for the first goal.. which rebounded off the post and in off Lumley then Peltier wasn't in the best position.. and tried to make up for it after the ball was played forward!! We created plenty of chances but we need to start putting them away.. all this looking up to the sky bullshyt and covering faces when we miss needs knocking on the head.. totally pointless. just get on with it.
