Campaign To Stamp Out Dog Fouling

There has been a noticable decline in responsibility of dog owners since the spike in dog ownership post Covid, in my opinion. So many dogs are poorly cared for, poorly trained, exercised and stimulated. The owners are 100% to blame. As for dog poo, it is another part of the problem, not just in town but in countryside too.

On our farm we have a long stretch of public footpath running through multiple grass fields that we use for grazing cattle. The majority of people are brilliant, friendly, respectful and it is great to see them enjoying the countryside. There is, however, a percentage of people with ignorance to the importance of picking up poo on grazing land, just because it is in the countryside. We had 14 in calf heifers abort calves in one season a couple of years back from neospora which both our farm vet and the ministry vets put down to contact with contaminated dog poo. Likelihood was that it was from one dog walked there regularly - pretty devastating.

I don't know what the answer is to be honest. Like so many things in society people have developed this aggressive 'nobody is telling me what to do, what are you going to do about it' attitude.

I think most dog owners are responsible and pick up waste as per law.

Growing up in the early 80s I'd regularly stand in dog turd. Nowt worse than putting in a slide tackle then getting a horrific smell on your clothes. Things are far better now.

Cats get away with alot. They're free to roam. They see my raised beds and freshly dug borders as their own personal toilet.
The worst pitch was the one at the monkey tree in Stockton always covered in dog *****.

Yes Monkey tree was bad. Willey Flatts pitch in Yarm was a minefield, pot holes and dog turd. Special mention for the Harold Wilson and Village Park.

School pitches were normally fine but still couldn't be guaranteed to be turd free

And dont get me started on Horses.

As an owner of two dogs I just don't get why people can't clean up after them, as surely they've also stood in dog **** enough times?

Just need to make the fines bigger for people not cleaning up after their dogs, or not putting poo bags in the bin. People just don't learn unless the punishment is severe, or unless someone is made an example of.

Could also make the fines larger for public walkways (paved and unpaved) and children's areas like parks etc.

Big fines and post their pictures on social media, it would stop within a week.

But it's always about the dogs, but what I don't get is how come nobody ever says anything about cat **** or horse ****?

There's a bridleway near my house and if I go one way out of my house towards a "rougher area" the unpaved paths are caked in dogshit, but if I go the other way to the nice area I barely see any, but there is horse **** all over the place. It's like there's a proper class system to this **** problem.

I've lost count at the amount of times I've reported it to the council. The walk to school has turned into running the gauntlet. Fresh deposits every day sometimes. Nothing worse than standing in it.

Good point about cat poo I've seen them **** in my front garden. They shouldn't be allowed to just wander anywhere

Not picking up dog poo is inexcusable, my dogs are never off lead unless we’re at an enclosed field we pay for and even then I follow them around making sure I pick everything up.

We’ve got a greyhound and a whippet at the moment, I thought I’d have dogs and most likely greyhounds in particular for the rest of my life but I’m sick to death of dog owners, I might be done after these 2 leave us. My greyhound has been attacked by off lead dogs 3 times now, latest being a few weeks ago when 3 of them ran at us and went for her, one of the ******* bit my leg as I was trying to fight them off.

I’ll never understand what goes through people’s heads having dogs off lead in public spaces unless they’re very well trained and have impeccable recall, your dog should never be approaching mine off lead unless we talk about it first, I don’t care if “he’s friendly”, what if my dog isn’t?

I have an American friend that doesn’t understand it at all, seems like most dogs are on lead there, not sure if it’s a law in the US. He’s baffled every time I tell him on a 45 minute walk here I’ll get at least 5 off lead dogs approach my dog.

Aye, it's not like their owners are following them around with poo bags or walking them around on leads, I don't think I've ever seen that to be honest.

It seems we avoid that in our garden, probably because of the dogs, but my neighbours front lawn gets caned 😂 The closest I've seen them come to ours is a few of them going along our back fence. I bet I've been tricked a couple of times though, picking up cat **** out the back, thinking it was our dogs ****.

It keeps on happening outside my house. It winds my partner right up. She put a camera in the window and found that it was the teenage sons of the couple down the road. I politely asked the parents to ask him to pick it up, and was told to F off. I’m a reasonable guy and don’t intend to report them. I just bag it up and fling the bag into the garden of the scruffy f’ckers.

I tend to put my dogs in the back of the car and walk them in dog fields near me. Its just easier no hassle and theres a dog bin at the entrance we use.

Another thing what's with idiots taking the dogs to teesside park to stand outside every shop.

Their sons sh1t on your doorstep?

Expecting people to just take home dog ****, and not providing the bins will just make the problem significantly worse
Crazy the amount of dog walking places that barely have a bin every few miles

Providing proper bins is exactly what our council tax should be used for
Improved funding for childrens and adults social services or bins for irresponsible dog owners who cant dispose of their own cr@p? What's most important?

A £1000 fine might help . It’s disgusting and just like driving standards or general litter being disposed off , picking up poo has properly deteriorated recently .

Fines and education … oh and dogs on leashes at all times

I am a dog lover but I would report them. Its unbelievable how they think its acceptable

I agree with the off lead problem, I come at it from a slightly different angle. I have a Jack Russell/parsons and she looks very cute but has a penchant for spaniels ears.

It drives me mad when off lead dogs come and sniff her because sometimes she can get quite feisty and I’d hate her to bite someone else’s dog.

Yes I’m sure it’s one or the other.
If you have ever worked in the public sector and seen the struggle to present a balanced budget then you will know it is one or the other. None essential services are the first to get cut to fund overspend in underfunded children's services. How about a dog tax to pay for the bins and the wages for staff to empty them?
