The Cambridge Rules drawn up in 1848 were one of the major starting points for modern football. From this point on we were playing the same game. Before that every public school had a different version of football.
Unified rules allowed football to become a game that could be played competitively and once workers were allowed a Saturday afternoon off work from the 1870s football took off across the north and Midlands. Before that you had to be well off to have the time to play and watch, as Sunday was church day.
A project to mark the anniversary and history of Cambridge Rules is coming towards a conclusion. They have designed several stone monoliths that are being taken around the world with the rules carved into them.
The artist behind the Ayresome Park Trophy Room sculpture trail, Neville Gabie is at the heart of things along with designer Alan Ward who I worked with at Bradford Park Avenue.
Anyway this short film shows a Cambridge Rules stone being unveiled in The Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in November 2017. The Maracana is one of the international homes of football and will now be a home of the Cambridge Rules.

FA's final published laws of 1863 retained many of the differences from the Cambridge rules that had been present in the earlier draft... The historical significance of these distinctions was, however, minor in comparison to the decision to reject hacking and carrying the ball.
