Calum Chambers has been released by Aston Villa

I can’t believe what I’m reading from some people. Calum Chambers is TWICE the defender of anyone we currently have at the club. That is why he has played in the Premier League all his career. He would be an unbelievable, statement signing and when someone like this is available you surely push the boat out (without over-stretching) to get them in.

I would have him back but VDB, Lenihan and Clarke are all good enough to be starting for a promotion chasing side. Fry is a good squad player at this level.

Chambers would want big wages so I'd prefer for us to use the money to bring back Giles, and sign a no 10 and LW.

So why is he signing for Cardiff then?

I think he was very good for us but in a defensively stacked team

That was some years ago now and a premier league club that bought him for good money decided he wasn't good enough for where they are at.

No doubt he can do a championship job, but big wages would be needed due to no fee; he will already be on inflated wages as villa themselves signed him on a free so he isn't going to be taking a 15k a week cut price deal to sign with a champo club, he'll want good wedge.

I'd rather us get players like Rav that are in an upward trajectory rather then catch people on the way down based on what they were like for us 7 odd years ago

We have Luke Ayling and Tommy Smith.

RB is one of our strongest areas.
Is Smith fully fit, will he return to the same levels as before his reckless challenge against Real Betis last pre season? In his few cameos before getting injured again against Birmingham at home he looked way off the pace. This was taken from Teesside Live yesterday.

'As far as when he might be back available, Boro are cautious about putting a date on that because of the length of time he's been out for"

He's 32 he his recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, I be very surprised if he returns to pre Real Betis levels or anywhere near it, if he does return. Add into that Lenihan didn't play yesterday and has been out for a while, then looking at our starting lineup we have a strong 1st team but might go into the start of the season lacking defensive cover and subs.

In the last eleven season he has played 184 Premier League games - that's less than 11 games a season. In contrast, Lenihan has played 299 games and is 10 months older, Ok not in the Premier League, but shows what a higher level professional player should be achieving.

Hence given free transfers by Arsenal and Villa in the last 2.5 years.

If he keeps fit Cardiff have a very good player at Championship level.

I am sure CC's agent has lobbied every EPL team and Championship clubs with parachute payments to get him a contract and failed.

He would prob start for Cardiff and ride the pine here. If I were him, I would choose them. Really don't think we need another in his position anyway.
