Calls to make South End a city

Yes It can mean it but city status doesn’t automatically qualify for increased investment although the status does give a “panache” It is symbolic primarily. This article from 9 years ago explains it well I think.

Why do towns want to become cities? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-13841482
I have said many times I had a minor role in the failed City Bid of 2021 - and both Sunderland and Preston (the most recent cities at that time) came up with figures for the benefits - that is what I am alluding to.
Middlesbrough Council will still have the documents - it was a lot of money.

Completely disagree.

A man was murdered doing his duty, he spent a significant portion of his career campaigning for Southend to be made a city, it's a decent gesture to grant that honour.
He campaigned for lots of things; throwing out city status for Southend, because of his death, is inappropriate and way over the top. It is an insult to the many other towns who are legitimately applying for City status.

How is it?

They're applying for it at the jubilee next year, they can still do so without the burden of competing against a town where an MP who prominently campaigned for city status was murdered, there would have been strong pressure to award it to Southend next year, this way that pressure is removed and the status has been awarded when the tragedy of his death is still fresh in the public conscience.

They're literally just changing the definition of Southend from a town to a city, it's a change in wording, a bit of added prestige and little else.

The monarch can grant city status whenever they want for whatever reason, it's just convention that it's only done in rare circumstances, so this route is no less legitimate than being granted it because it's the anniversary of the Queen ascending the throne and representatives from towns have submitted an essay asking for it.

I was horrified when he was murdered, but the award of city status as some form of commemoration is wholly inappropriate. It is crass.

Next year will be one of celebration for the whole country. In 2022 Her Majesty the Queen will mark 70 years as reigning monarch. As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, towns across the UK are being invited to bid for city status.
Middlesbrough Council is leading a bid to have the honour bestowed on our town.

What we need to do

This is an exciting opportunity to show off Middlesbrough’s strengths and explain how city status would give us a boost for the future.
The government sets out clear guidelines for the evidence we must provide.
Our efforts must concentrate on our application, which will be judged against those from other towns.
Government ministers will recommend which town or towns should be given the honour. The final decision is made by the Queen.

What the city status bid will focus on

It’s going to be a fun process.

We get to talk about Middlesbrough’s distinct identity, civic pride, heritage, history and traditions.
We’ll also detail our record of innovation – from our industrial beginnings right through to our present day digital pioneers – and our vibrant and welcoming community.

We will set out Middlesbrough’s Royal associations and proudly look back on previous visits from the Royal Family.
Albert Park, Middlesbrough

A walk through the trees on a glorious day in Albert Park.

We also have the difficult job of narrowing down a list of notable figures from Middlesbrough who have made significant contributions to society.
There will also be a focus on statistics, like our population and economic activity.

The bid will highlight our green spaces, sport and leisure facilities, and our close links with the voluntary sector.
That’s a lot to cram into roughly 20 pages!

How you can get involved

As part of the bid we can submit up to 50 photographs. The guidance states they should be of places within the area that would be the city centre.

We’re inviting residents and businesses to submit photos of the area from Albert Park as far as Middlehaven Docks as part of our bid.

You’re also very welcome to send personal stories and suggestions for other sections of the bid to citystatus@middlesbrough.gov.uk.
We need to submit the finished bid by early December.

Why would there have been strong pressure to award it to Southend?
I was horrified when he was murdered, but the award of city status as some form of commemoration is wholly inappropriate. It is crass.

Because of the fact that one of their MPs was such a vocal advocate of it gaining city status, and he was murdered whilst carrying out his duty in that city.
I'd never even heard of him before his tragic death and one of the first things mentioned in all the articles surrounding him was that he'd campaigned tirelessly for Southend to be made a city
I think it's very obvious that would figure heavily in the decision making process regarding the awards.

I just don't agree whatsoever, so I'll leave it there.

Then get behind the Stockton bid of 2028.
