Calls to make South End a city

Absolute b0llocks.
He was staunch catholic and very much anti abortion.
Why not ban abortion, that would be a great achievement for him.

He was also a strong supporter of building a statue to Dame Vera Lynn and got the fund raising started. Apparently Vera Lynn's daughter now feels that it should be a memorial to Vera and him.

People need to get a sense of perspective. Is Batley a city?

Did Batley ever campaign to be a city?
Not sure I understand your intense response to what is nothing more than a rather innocuous suggestion that city status be granted in tribute to a murdered MP who campaigned for it to be so.
Would it really bother you if Southend did become a city?

It has as much reason to be a city as Middlesbrough does, and I think the tragic circumstances will make it a certainty next year.

If that was the reason given it would perfectly sum up how far this country has dropped.

And what are the usual reasons for granting towns city status as they seem rather frivolous anyway?
Offering Southend city status as tribute to a man who was murdered whilst serving his constituents and had long campaigned for Southend to be a city as part of the Platinum Jubilee next year seems reasonable and far from some sort of indicator of how standards have dropped.

Middlescity, can’t see it catching on.

“Brough (/brʌf, brɒx/) may mean or refer to an area, enclosure, round tower or outer wall of a feudal castle”.

Don’t know where the castle is though.

Chelmsford to Southend is 20 miles - it would be a nice tribute of course that is true but surely you cannot crown two Essex towns as city in a row over the rest of the country. Tees Valley/Teesside is the biggest conurbation in the country without a city. Chelmsford was supposed to be a city for Essex when its status was upgraded in 2012.
I think as all supporters of Middlesbrough Football Club (?) shouldn't we all also support the city bid for Middlesbrough.
Forget where you live, Stockton, Ingleby, that London etc and back the bid for the city of your football team. If our friends don't stick together what chance have we got?

Stockton, like all the best stuff in Teesside ;) (Mind we knocked it down ages ago, I think it was on the site of the Swallow Hotel?)

What would the area gain by Middlesbrough/Stockton or wherever becoming a city? I admit I struggle to care either way and sort of like being a town in a perverse way. If they make Southend a city does that mean that they can't make Middlesbrough one as well? Or is it only one place at a time?

Seems a lot of fuss over a rather nebulous "benefit"?

Carry on.

The granting of city status and the additional funding and investment that brings should be based on the criteria of merit, not as an emotional response to a tragic event inflicted upon an individual, of course Sir David Amess should have a proper and fitting memorial, perhaps something linked to animal welfare which was a lifelong passion of his, but it shouldn't be something as political or as loaded as upgrading Southend to a city.

Certainly not who the biggest drama queen is.

(Gets Teesside chip out of the closet, sticks on shoulder).

Of course they can give it two Cities in Essex and probably will. Now if it was a northern region we were talking about.......
