Caller from Boro on LBC claims asylum seekers get given free cars

People in this area have a fear and are very right leaning

‘Why should people be able to knock out kids and rely on the state’
‘Why should people come to this country when we can’t look after our own’

People in this are- have traditionally worked hard (especially people 55+) for a not a very good living, and they don’t want to feel or see people not getting on with life without going through a similar turmoil as them

Essentially "I suffered so I expect everyone else to have it even harder" ?

And yet again, targeting their ire at the wrong direction. People conditioned to punch down or sideways in the (largely correct) assumption that they won't realise they should actually be punching up.

The gvt and media have done a brilliant job on most of this country.

That call isn't even about immigration, it's actually about housing policy.

Basically annoyed the non while family in the street can afford something they can’t despite saying in the same sentence they are working so in all likelihood paid for it themselves

People like this are complete idiots and make it so obvious how misinformation is spread. Happy to take anything as a fact without the intelligence to check it provided it confirms their prejudices

The billionaires at the top with huge levels of power and influence have people like this believing the ones at the very bottom with nothing are the ones causing all of her problems, and like many others she’s happy to fall for it

Assulym seekers get very little financial support.

Most want to work here but are not allowed to while seeking assulym.

I do think there is a resentment than comes from the difference in opportunities in say areas like Teesside compared to London. Someone may have struggled for the last 40 years on Teesside in low paid work with periods of unemployment wanting to stay near their families and friends etc. But see people from overseas come to the UK, live and work in say the London area and do well for the same effort. Some of this is because of the greater opportunities in employment and rise in property prices in London etc relative to Teesside.

I think that's a massive generalisation. In the heydays of ICI, BSC and Seal Sands tens of thousands of people in this area made a very good living on above average wages and thousands have used their skills in the oil and gas industry further afield.

In today's world, Middlesbrough has taken more refugees per capita than anywhere else (the other standout place being Glasgow) and I believe we have made a pretty good fist of it considering we are now one of the most deprived areas in the UK. Of course you will find pockets of resentment but that is true of anywhere. There are some very well healed towns in the South East that won't welcome any refugees at all

asylum seekers, refugees, economic migrants - none of these have caused any of the issues the country faces today. Immigration is a net contributor to our economy and one of the issues we will face in the next few years is too few people to do the jobs we need doing.

meanwhile the Torys stoke fear and fuel their own culture war to distract from their own economic failures in a desperate attempt to scare people into voting for more of their failing policies.

james OBrien being condescending doesnt make the woman on the call any less of an idiot.

BBC - I agree with you its very humbling to see Middlesbrough Council helping a lot and some wealthy towns in the South doing virtually zero.

Ref heydays on Teesside - times were much better in the 1960s and 1970s, but have been fairly grim for the last 40 years especially for younger people who have not picked up the necessary skills to use say in the Middle East when times were tough on Teesside.

I started listening to her but I couldn't finish. I've heard it all before and it makes me sad.

Neither her, her Dad, any of her family or any of the refugees we welcome in this area should be struggling, in any way. We are an insanely rich country, but that wealth is distributed in such an obscene way that we end up with these sad scenarios where decent people are being made to consider each other as enemies. I always say, we have far in common with the poor sods who arrive in boats than literally any of the major decision makers of this country who call them invaders.

Our population has been manipulated to such an extent that we accept the scapegoat the rich man points us towards. It's no coincidence that we're going through yet another period of National wrangling about immigration, shortly after the Tories and their masters led us to the brink of economic disaster and after a summer of Tory party political turmoil in the middle of a cost of living crisis. The serfs needs distracting again so bring out the big bad refugees, again. Seen it all before.

This caller was just low-hanging fruit for James O'Brien, he didn't even have to try to make her look stupid.

She called him a pr*ck at the end of it but that didn't make the clip.
