'bus route number query

I'm just watching a railway DVD that I haven't seen in ages which features the Middlesbrough-Whitby line. It has a a short sequence from Middlesbrough town centre with a United 'bus coming along Corporation Road (you can see Newhouses in the background) and turning left into, presumably, Albert Road. It bears the number 1 but the destination blind is unclear. I remember the 58, 63 and 65 which became the 258, 263 and 265, but not the 1. Any ideas? I'd date the film as probable early '70s given that the corporation 'bus behind is that odd turquoisy colour that replaced the blue when I lived there in the 60s.

The 'bus is a single-decker and the destination appears to have two words.

Middlesbrough-Hartlepool, and still is today.

It doesn't look like Hartlepool. And the second word looks like it could be ICI. Could it be Billingham ICI which could have been part of the Hartlepool route? And did it go over the Transporter as otherwise it would have been heading in the opposite direction?

"That odd turquoisy colour." That was awful wasn't it. They clearly got all the surplus Middlesbrough Corporation and Stockton Borough paint and mixed it together. They also had the worst logo I've seen in my life - like a flying banana - the banana representing the 'C' in Cleveland Corporation. I actually wrote to the head of transport and offered to do one for free but he seemed happy with his banana - I think it was his design.

Hartlepool-Seaton-Port Clarence-Middlesbrough was and still is the route I think.

I remember seeing it as a kid in Seaton when waiting for the Billingham bus. Could it be via ICI?

Only thing doubting it is the colour, it was a maroon bus of the Hartlepool corporate buses.

Not quite. The turquoise and cream was the livery of Teesside Municipal Transport which operated from 1968 to 1974 and TMT buses just had “Teesside Municipal Transport written in silver grey on the cream section between the decks on double deckers and elsewhere on single deckers, no logo. Turquoise and cream was chosen as a compromise between the green and cream liveries of Stockton Corporation and the Teesside Rail-less Traction Board (TRTB) and the beautiful blue and cream of Middlesbrough Corporation, the three former companies which merged into TMT. It then became Cleveland Transit which was the company with the “C” referred to, the colours of which were “Cleveland green and jasmine”, officially.

Cheers, thanks for the correction, memory and all that. Transit - that's the word that wouldn't come back, ta.

EDIT And thanks again - I did actually mean to type 96 - getting on a bit you know. :(

Could it say “WORK MEN” ? There were a lot if workmen’s Specials in those days for construction sites, etc.

I'd have to watch the DVD again, but it looked like a longish word followed by a shortish one. But it was definitely a United 'bus. Colour, type of 'bus and the style of the writing on the side.

Must see if I can find this on YouTube or something. What’s the title of the dvd, Capy?

I have a friend who is a bus fan, I will ask him about the number 1

It's called 'Heritage DMUs in Yorkshire'. That'll upset a few.

It's beginning to make sense now. Corporation 'buses served Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool. Beyond that, including Redcar, United 'buses were used. ICI Wilton was beyond Middlesbrough so would have been served by United. I think.
