Burgzorg

Burgzorg scored against Leeds, Preston, Sunderland, Sheffield United.. not bad for a league one winger.
He got 5 goals and 2 assists in 42 appearances in the league. He scored against Preston, who finished 20th. He got two against Luton, who finished 22nd. He scored a penalty against Sheffield United. He scored against Sunderland, you can have that one.

Of his two assists, one was for Gilbert at Hull, who finished 21st. I don’t know who the other one was against but we can give him the benefit of the doubt and say it was against someone in the top half.

That means he’s contributed 1 goal, 1 penalty and 1 assist from open play against teams that didn’t finish in the bottom 6 or weren’t newly promoted Oxford United, who finished in the bottom 7.

He is not the answer for a team with aspirations of making the top 6.

Portsmouth away

He played 42 league games last season and you’ve picked out a three-match match spell against two of the bottom four, one of whom went down, and a newly promoted Oxford United. That to me says everything - he’s a very good League One player but not good enough for the Championship, certainly not a top-half Championship club and most definitely not for us if we’re serious about going up.

And this is our issue. We have too many of those players - Burgzorg, Barlaser, Glover, Edmundson. Silvera is probably the same though he’s had a good summer. Hamilton as well. That’s half a dozen. Gilbert is another. There’s 7. Ayling is winding down, you can count him in that I suppose and that’s 8. That’s half our senior squad, or thereabouts, and another handful are either injured or still trying to come back to fitness.

We have not strengthened anywhere near enough yet. Hopefully we will do that in the coming weeks and then 5, 6, 7 of those League One level players we have will be gradually eased out. And Burgzorg is one of them.
I understand entirely where you are coming from.

I think two areas where we disagree -

1. Every championship squad will have players like these - it is why the league is always so close outside of a few outliers. Fabrini was huge for us at times in Karanka's promotion season, but also was not good enough a lot.

2. Players can mature, improve and click at unexpected times - especially in a new team. Akpom is the extreme version of something that happens quite a lot. (Mctominay won serie A player of the season...). Forshaw and Morsy are good examples - our fans wrote them off and they played at levels above us.

Burgzorg is 26. Next 3-4 years he should be peaking, but next year will be the first time he has played in the same league for 3 straight seasons. He should be much more likely to succeed than last year.

It might not work out.. but it might - and I think that is what I expect from the players that are 2nd/3rd choice.

Burgzorg seems to building an almost cultish following from an admiration pack - which fortunately numbers about half a dozen Boro fans drooling over and discussing him as they eat their meat paste butties. Mysteriously they see "a player in there" although whilst I desperately want to see it myself, I just can't. Once again we are going to get frustrated when he turns up and again he will annoys the hell out of us. He already has in the pre-season friendlies.
He's clearly not the answer and often very frustrating to watch, but at least he gave everything at the back end of last season, when it certainly looked like some of his team-mates had chucked the towel in.

We've got aspirations of making the top six?, who knew??

I think so many people seem to think of football players in binary.

- they are great
-they are not good enough

I am not Burgzorgs biggest fan, but I am spending time arguing in his favour because I think too many people are talking about him as if he has never played a good game, is past his peak.

I also don't like writing people off, maybe to my detriment

As it stands, we have Whittaker, Azaz, McGree and Burgzorg as our options for the two attacking mid positions. I guess some might suggest Forss could be an option, but I'd imagine Edwards will prefer to use him as a cover for the striker if Forss does stay here.

Gilbert will be sold in my opinion and I expect Hamilton to be loaned out.

We just can't rely on McGree to stay fit over the course of the season, so if he picks up a long-term injury it leaves us with 3 options for the 2 AM positions.

We definitely need to bring in another AM before the deadline in my opinion, but we also need squad depth, so with that in mind I'll be happy enough to see Burgzorg stay. He'll be on relatively low wages and he did have a good run of form last season playing on the left wing. I think he's fine as a squad filler.

Spot on. We have a few who are inconsistent, that’s why they are our squad players and not starters or playing for someone else. Burgzorg wouldn’t be starting tomorrow if Azaz or McGree were fit, he would have started fewer games last season if McGree had been fit. That’s what you get from Burgzorg, game time and giving it his all. I wouldn’t have bought him in the first place, but he’s here now so I hope he finds some consistency as we’re going to need him these next few games.

For me he lacks a footballing brain. He could have all the talent in the world but if he is unable to follow orders in a composed way during a game it becomes useless.

It reminds me in a way of Adama Traore* when he was here who was explosive and a potential world beater but needed someone to harness it... who would have believed that man would be Tony Pulis!

I'm not sure we will ever see the best of him, either here or wherever he ends up.

*I'm not for one second suggesting that Traore and Burgzorg are similar players before someone slaughters me.. just that both seemed to lack a football brain!

Genuine question (I say this because it might not seem genuine).

Do you enjoy insulting players like that?

I've always been a soft lad that doesn't really understand banter and interested in the motivation.

Not particularly no, I’d much rather he was good. But he isn’t.

This is a man who was suspended twice from Mainz and a man who relegated Huddersfield fans couldn’t wait to see the back of. We were warned before we signed him. He hasn’t done anything to justify or to deserve wearing that shirt.
