Bundesliga Advice

Planning a long weekend in Germany near the end of October with the boy to go and watch some live Bundesliga. The aim is to try and get to games on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday prior to heading home, fixtures permitting. Will probably stay in Dusseldorf to be within striking distance of the highest number of venues.

Now I've got it in my head that Dortmund and Bayern aside, getting tickets oughtn't be too much of a hassle - can probably buy online in advance once we know which games we're after. Am I right about this or is it way harder than that? In particular are advance overseas sales permitted, or will we have to rock up on the day and hope for the best?

Any pointers from those who've done this themselves, or even ex-pats...

I've never had a problem getting tickets, which I've always bought on line but it's probably best to try and avoid big local derbies such as Schalke v Dortmund or Gladbach v Köln as these tend to sell out. Unlike in this country it's generally OK for away fans to go in home areas as long as they don't go in the home 'end'. You need to keep an eye on the fixture dates as they are sometimes decided quite close to when they are played, but staying in Düsseldorf is a good idea as there are plenty of clubs within very easy striking distance. Unless you are very unlucky you should get in three games quite easily as long as you don't mind the odd second division game.

edit: my last visit was pre-Brexit (just) so I don't know if that has had any effect in getting hold of tickets.

Look at the fixture list around the time of your trip and then buy online. Keep your eye on when the tickets become available and then get right on it to get the best choice. Most games are sell-outs or near sell-outs but I believe they always keep tickets available for visitors. Even Bayern and Dortmund.

Yeah, we know which weekend and what the fixtures are, so as long as the Friday/Saturday/Sunday split works well, Dusseldorf's perfect. Been before and it's a great place - we can do a load of Kraftwerk geeking out when we're not at the games.

And Second Division is completely acceptable - St Pauli away to Bielefeld that weekend looks most tempting...

It's a good point, that, about tickets. Don't believe the stories about them all being very cheap. The really cheap ones will already have gone. The rest match English prices.

We did a weekend of Dusseldorf, Dortmund and Bochum in Autumn 2019.

Dusseldorf and Bochum were cheap, although Bochum were in the league below at that point. We bought at Dusseldorf on Friday night and at Bochum on Sunday at the grounds.

Dortmund we paid touts for tickets high up in the main stand, 100 Euros each.

We stayed in Dusseldorf and that was ideal for getting around.

A Friday-Monday trip is definitely on the agenda this coming season.

Just as Covid was kicking off we had a weekend in Koln/Dusseldorf and I went to Bayer on the Saturday PM. No problem getting tickets in advance but didn't look like loads of spare seats on the day. It's not a massive ground but great facilities and atmosphere.

You'll need a fast arrival and departure though as Leverkusen seemed quite thin on the ground for eating/drinking. It's basically a small town.

Free travel to the match on the trains with your ticket as well. (y)

Really need to get my next trip planned, watching football in Germany is addictive and exactly how it should be over here.

I would 100% recommend Bundesliga 2. V good atmosphere. Plus Bielefeld are my favourite German team and St Pauli will bring a good away following.

St Pauli are my nominal German team, Bielefeld had my favourite kit last year. What's not to like about that one?
